Abstract: A process for the production of hydrogen comprising the steps of: (i) subjecting a gaseous mixture comprising a hydrocarbon and steam to steam reforming in reformer followed by autothermal reforming with an oxygen-rich gas to generate a reformed gas mixture, (ii) increasing the hydrogen content of the reformed gas mixture by subjecting it to one or more water-gas shift stages in a water-gas shift unit to provide a hydrogen-enriched reformed gas, (iii) passing the hydrogen-enriched reformed gas and an oxygen-rich gas to an oxidation unit containing an oxidation catalyst that converts carbon monoxide present in the hydrogen-enriched reformed gas to carbon dioxide, to form a carbon-dioxide enriched gas mixture, (iv) cooling the carbon dioxide-enriched gas mixture and separating condensed water therefrom, and (v) passing the carbon dioxide enriched gas mixture to a carbon dioxide separation unit to provide a carbon dioxide gas stream and a hydrogen product gas stream.

Abstract: A method for activating a catalyst is described comprising the steps of: (i) installing a reduced and passivated catalyst containing crystallites of a catalytic metal comprising nickel, cobalt or iron in elemental form encapsulated by a layer comprising an oxide of the catalytic metal in a reactor, such as a steam methane reforming reactor, in which it is to be used, and (ii) heating the reduced and passivated catalyst in the reactor under a vacuum or an inert gas to a temperature in the range (TT−X) to (TT+Y), where TT is the Tammann temperature of the catalytic metal in elemental form in degrees Centigrade, X is 400 and Y is 200, to form a catalytically active surface on the catalyst without requiring the application of a reducing gas.

Abstract: A process is described for steam reforming a hydrocarbon feedstock, comprising passing a mixture of the hydrocarbon feedstock and steam through a catalyst bed comprising a particulate nickel steam reforming catalyst and a structured nickel steam reforming catalyst disposed within a plurality of externally heated tubes in a tubular steam reformer, wherein each tube has an inlet to which the mixture of hydrocarbon and steam is fed, an outlet from which a reformed gas containing hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, steam and methane is recovered, and the steam reforming catalyst at the outlet of the tubes is the structured steam reforming catalyst, wherein the particulate steam reforming catalyst comprises 5 to 30% by weight nickel, and the structured steam reforming catalyst comprises nickel dispersed over the surface of a porous metal oxide present as a coating on a non-porous metal or ceramic structure.
