A non-combustible, inorganic heat insulation which can be sprayed onto a surface being insulated is particularly useful for forming the cold face insulation layer in a catalytic reformer housing. The insulation is formed from an inorganic cement having glass and/or ceramic microspheres mixed therein.

A method for producing polymers in powdered form is disclosed, including the formation of a finely divided solvent-free spray of a liquid monomer of the polymer which is to be produced, or of a reactive unsaturated polymer, and the passage of that spray through a high energy electron beam in an inert atmosphere in order to polymerize the monomer or reactive unsaturated polymer of the spray while in the spray form and produce a powdered polymer product. The preferred method develops a charge in the particles of the finely divided spray and passes the charged spray through a charged yoke to ensure particle separation and compress the pattern of the spray prior to passage through the electron beam, which is preferably in the form of a curtain. In a preferred embodiment, a polymerized powdered paint is produced by this method, and the liquid monomer and/or reactive unsaturated polymer may be compounded with color, initiators, pigments or other materials prior to polymerization of a finely divided spray of that liquid. Furthermore, the polymerized powdered products produced by this method are also disclosed.

A porous plate used in a fuel cell is sealed with an essentially 100% active material and catalyst mixture. The mixture is absorbed into and fills essentially the entire void volume provided by the pores. The mixture is then thermally shocked to partially cure the mixture thereby preventing wicking. The partially cured mixture is then post cured by elevating the temperature such that the catalyst initiates free radical polymerization. Since the sealant is essentially 100% active, there are no escape paths formed during the curing process, and the final seal is essentially 100% leak proof.

A continuous, pinhole-free thermoplastic polymer coating, which may be a fluoroelastomer, is applied to a porous metal surface in a single coating step by spraying the thermoplastic polymer from a thermal spray gun onto a porous metal surface which is at substantially room temperature to form a semi-fused, highly porous coating. The porous metal surface is then heated to fuse the thermoplastic polymer coating into a well-anchored, continuous film. This method permits the application of a continuous thermoplastic polymer coating with one coating step rather than with the plurality of coating steps currently needed to produce a coating with comparable properties.
Abstract:
A seal material having improved sealing characteristics and useful in high temperature, corrosive environments, particularly fuel cells is disclosed. The material comprises an acid resistant, high temperature stable fluorinated elastomer and a blowing agent which activate at a temperature within the range of curing temperatures of the elastomer. Improved sealing characteristics due to volume expansion of the seal material applied and activated within the fuel cell were observed. The process of activating the seal material at the operating temperature of the fuel cell is also disclosed.The invention also discloses the process of using the seal material within a fuel cell.
