摘要:
A pharmaceutical and/or veterinary formulation comprising deslorelin and an excipient, the formulation being characterised in that, in vitro, it releases deslorelin into phosphate buffered saline, as hereinbefore described, at 37° C. at a rate of about 2-80 &mgr;g/day for at least 200 days. The formulation may be used for prevention of reproductive function, particularly in dogs and cats, and for the treatment, particularly in humans, of prostate and breast cancer and other diseases and conditions where suppression of testosterone or estradiol levels is beneficial.

The present invention provides for a method for recovering microorganisms from a sample that is rapid and provides microorganisms substantially free of adsorbents and other particles. The method includes mixing a sample comprising a medium, an adsorbent and microorganisms with a first solution in a first vessel; separating the adsorbent from the medium and the microorganisms and removing the microorganisms and a portion of the medium from the first vessel; mixing the microorganisms and the portion of the medium with a second solution in a second vessel to resuspend the microorganisms; and separating the microorganisms from the resulting mixture.

A method for identification and/or characterization of a microbial agent present in a sample includes a step of analytical test data (e.g., obtaining intrinsic fluorescence values over a range of emission wavelengths) from the microbial agent. The analytical test data is transformed thereby minimizing strain to strain variations within an organism group. With the aid of a programmed computer, a multi-level classification algorithm coded as a set of processing instructions operates on the transformed analytic test data. The multiple levels correspond to different levels in a taxonomic hierarchy for microbial agents suspected of being in the sample.

A detection instrument determines whether a specimen container (e.g., blood culture bottle) is positive for presence of microbial agent growth therein. When the container is deemed positive it is made available (e.g, transferred or exposed to) to an automated instrument performing identification and/or characterization of the microbial agent. The identification and/or characterization instrument removes a portion of the sample from the specimen container and places it into a disposable separation and concentration device. The microbial agent is concentrated via optional selective lysis of non-microbial agent cellular material which may be present and centrifugation. A reading module reads the concentrated microbial agent using spectroscopic methods, e.g., measurements of intrinsic fluorescence. Such interrogation may occur while the microbial agent remains concentrated in the disposable device.

The present invention relates to methods and systems for scanning, detecting, and monitoring microorganisms on solid or semi-solid media using intrinsic fluorescence (IF) measurements. The methods are further directed to detection, characterization and/or identification of microorganisms on a solid or semi-solid media using intrinsic fluorescence (IF) measurements that are characteristic of said microorganisms.

The present invention provides for methods for detecting bacterial pathogens in a sample. A preferred method includes the steps of: suspending a sample comprising a medium and microorganisms, the microorganisms suspected of comprising bacterial pathogens; mixing the sample, an adsorbent and a first solution in a vessel; separating the adsorbent and the microorganisms from the medium and the bulk of the first solution and removing the medium and the bulk of the first solution from the vessel; adding a second solution to the vessel to resuspend the adsorbent and the microorganisms; and detecting agglutination of the adsorbent wherein the agglutination of the adsorbent signifies bacterial pathogens are present in the sample.

An automated instrument for identification and/or characterization of a microbial agent present in a sample. The instrument includes (a) a sample removal apparatus operative to remove a test sample from a specimen container and add the test sample to a disposable separation device; (b) a separation and concentration apparatus operative on the separation device to separate the microbial agent from other components which may be present in the test sample and concentrate the microbial agent within the separation device; and (c) a identification and/or characterization module interrogating the concentrated microbial agent to identify and/or characterize the microbial agent.

The present invention provides a method for detecting, and characterizing a microorganism present in a blood culture medium whereby the method may be accomplished utilizing a time-dependent spectroscopic technique to obtain at least two measurements directly of a blood culture medium and correlating said measurements for the detection and characterization of a microorganism, that may be present in the blood culture.
