A precise fluid flow meter fabricated by micromachining techniques measures a wide range of fluid flow rates. Two serial portions of an enclosed channel have different cross-sectional areas, and therefore different flow velocities. The fluid carries the thermal pulse through the flow channel to two sensor elements spaced apart along the channel downstream from the heating element. The transit time of the thermal pulse between the two sensor elements measures the fluid flow velocity.

The invention permits delivery of fractional doses to a patient in quantities which are directly proportional to the time period since the last dose or fraction thereof was delivered to the patient. In the preferred embodiments the apparatus includes a housing (58) including a casing (88) and a back plate (86), the housing containing a control switch (84) for opening and closing downstream conduit (62) and for depressing a floating plate (100) that thereby compresses a dose reservoir (90) with the beneficial agent (142) therein. A molded collapsible solution container defines a chamber-defining body portion wall having an integral neck portion and a shoulder portion at one end thereof. The container defines a pair of opposed gusset portions adjacent the shoulder portion at opposite ends of the shoulder portion, with the shoulder portion defining opposed shoulder edges extending between the gusset portions. A pair of opposed lines of flexing weakness are defined in the collapsible solution container and exhibit an arcuate cross section which extends inwardly of the container. The opposed lines of flexing weakness are positioned on each side of the container in generally parallel relation to the opposed shoulder edges with the opposed lines of flexing weakness being longitudinally spaced from the shoulder edges by a distance which is proportioned to cause the opposed lines of flexing weakness to abut one another as the container collapses inwardly about the opposed shoulder edges. Accordingly, the abutting lines of flexing weakness inhibit further collapse of the container under the pressure of suction, to slow the rate of subsequent collapse.

A thermoplastic pharmaceutical solution container includes a neck portion having at least one port through the neck portion. A thermoplastic port protector or closure covers the port and defines a frangible section. The closure has a length to diameter ratio providing good mechanical advantage leverage to rupture the frangible section when the closure is pushed sideways. A seal is formed with the closure by forcing a die heated above the melting point of the plastic material into the neck portion, removing a portion of the port protector and forming a depression. The frangible section is formed in the vertical side wall of the depression.

The ratchet mechanism comprises a set of teeth on the outer ring which act in cooperation with a set of teeth on the overcap thereby providing a means for preventing rotation of the outer ring in a direction tending to unscrew the outer ring from the overcap, but permitting rotation of the outer ring in the jacking direction.

The influsor (10) includes a housing (12) containing an elastomeric bladder (16) for receiving the liquid under pressure. The liquid is delivered from the bladder to a patient through tubing (36). A non-adjustable, preselected flow regulator (38) includes a capillary bore (48). The flow regulator (38) is disposed at the distal end of the tubing (36), such that the tubing may be primed quickly, in a time period virtually unaffected by the flow regulator (38). Distal placement of the flow regulator (38) results in a more constant temperature, and thus a more constant flow rate, of fluid flowing through the flow regulator.

The overcap and primary cap are provided, respectively, with an interlocking ring and undercut lip to provide for limited relative axial movement; the overcap and bottle neck are provided with interfitting lugs and ribs to provide for limited rotational movement. An outer ring has internal threads engaging external threads on the overcap and defines a jacking member whereby rotation of the outer ring moves the overcap upwardly to break the hermetic seals.
