摘要: A bone screw apparatus and method of implantation provides a bone screw having an elongated shaft of an oversized length with proximal and distal end portions. The distal end portion of the shaft has a cutting head. The proximal end portion of the shaft is sized and shaped to accept a driver tool, such as a drill chuck. The shaft is externally threaded along a majority of its length. A pair of opposed longitudinally extending circumferentially spaced flat surfaces are provided along the shaft. A removable head with a central opening enables the head to slide along the shaft proximally to distally. A ratcheting mechanism prevents movement of the head along the shaft in but one direction. A central opening of the head is shaped to conform to the shaped surfaces of the shaft, so that the head and shaft can be rotated as a unit by engaging and rotating the head. The tool receptive surface portion of the head includes intersecting external surfaces of the head spaced radially away from the shaft during use.

摘要: An intramedullary nail apparatus includes an elongated nail body having a longer section and a shorter section. A detachable connection affixes the larger and shorter sections together end to end, using a taper lock connection, for example. The shorter section can provide transverse openings therethrough for enabling one or more fasteners to attach it to bone tissue, depending upon the medical indication. The nail includes a bow that consists of two tangent radii. This bow allows for the anterior bow of the femur and the relative straightness of the tibia. Thus, the apparatus of the present invention enables the same stems to be used in the treatment of femoral and tibial fractures. A stem is selected for any indication based on the desired diameter and length. The bow allows for a simplified surgical technique and a reduction in inventory of the nail system.

摘要: Methods of fabricating implantable medical devices, preferably with PEEK, having antimicrobial properties, are disclosed. The antimicrobial effect is produced by incorporating ceramic particles containing antimicrobial metal cations into molten PEEK resin, which is subsequently allowed to cool and set in its final shape achieved by injection molding, cutting and machining or other techniques.

摘要: An up-cutting knife that has particular application for minimally invasive spinal surgical procedures. The knife includes an elongated tube that is operable to be inserted through a tubular retractor used in minimally invasive surgical procedures. One end of the elongated tube includes a curved head portion having a cutting blade formed on a top surface thereof and a suction port, and an opposite end of the tube is coupled to a handle having a chamber. A suction device can be coupled to an outlet port in the handle that causes blood and other surgical material to be drawn through the tube and out of the handle.

摘要: A pedicle screw and rod system that has particular application for spinal fusion surgery. The system includes pedicle screws having ball-shaped heads that are threaded through pedicles of adjacent vertebra into the vertebral body. The system also includes two cannulated posts having a head portion with a planar portion and an opening for accepting the head of the pedicle screw in a secure and multi-axial engagement. The system further includes a tube portion that is coupled to the head portion and extends above the patient's skin. The system also includes a lordotic slotted rod that is slid down the tube portions to be positioned on top of the head portions of the posts so that the planar portions are locked within the slot. Bolts are then slid down the tube portions and are threaded to a threaded portion on the planar portion.

摘要: An interbody device that restores the disc space height between two vertebrae during spinal fusion surgery. The device includes a center plate surrounded by a perimeter portion that combine to have a relatively flat configuration in one dimension and relatively wide configuration in a perpendicular dimension. After the disc space has been cleared, the device is inserted into the disc space in a direction so that the wide dimension of the device is substantially parallel to the body of the vertebrae. The device is then rotated so that the wide dimension of the device becomes perpendicular to the vertebral body so as to cause the disc space height to be restored. Bone graft material is then introduced through a fill tube coupled to the device so that the bone graft material is distributed on both sides of the center plate and into the disc space.

摘要: A minimally invasive surgical access device that allows access to a pathology being treated while significantly reducing the risk of damaging anatomical structures proximate the pathology. The access device includes a base portion having a central bore extending therethrough, and retractor blades pivotably mounted to the base portion. An insertion handle is coupled to the base portion to thread the retractor blades into the patient. The insertion handle is removed from the base portion, and a core hollow screw is threaded into the base portion to separate the retractor blades to gain access to the pathology through the hollow screw.
