摘要: A planar flexure member for resisting rotation about a central axis thereof includes, in various embodiments, a central portion comprising a plurality of attachment points; and at least one serpentine flexure arm extending from the central portion in a plane. The arm(s) terminate in an arcuate mounting rail that includes a series of attachment points. The rails are positioned in opposition to to each other to partially define and occupy a planar circular envelope radially displaced from but surrounding the central portion of the flexure member. A portion of the serpentine arms may extend to (or substantially to) the envelope between the mounting rails.

摘要: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a progressive muscle disease that is caused by severe defects in the dystrophin gene and results in the patient's death by the third decade. The present invention utilizes the Double Mutant mice (DM) as an appropriate human model for DMD as these mice are deficient for both dystrophin and utrophin (mdx/+, utrn −/−), die at 3 months of age and suffer from severe muscle weakness, pronounced growth retardation, kyphosis, weight loss, slack posture, and immobility. Expression from a transgene of novel human retinal dystrophin Dp260 was shown to prevent premature death and reduce the severe muscular dystrophy phenotype to a mild clinical myopathy. Electromyography, histology, radiography, magnetic resonance imaging, and behavior studies concluded that DM transgenic mice grew normally, had normal spinal curvature and mobility, and had reduced muscle pathology. EMG and histologic data from transgenic DM mice showed decreased abnormalities to levels typical of mild myopathy, while the DM mice exhibited severe abnormalities commonly seen in human dystrophinopathies. The transgenic DM mice also had measurable movement levels comparable to those of untreated mdx mice and controls.

摘要: The present invention provides a magnetic sifter that is small in scale, enables three-dimensional flow in a direction normal to the substrate, allows relatively higher capture rates and higher flow rates, and provides a relatively easy method of releasing captured biomolecules. The magnetic sifter includes at least one substrate. Each substrate contains a plurality of slits, each of which extends through the substrate. The sifter also includes a plurality of magnets attached to the bottom surface of the substrate. These magnets are located proximal to the openings of the slits. An electromagnetic source controls the magnitude and direction of magnetic field gradient generated by the magnets. Either one device may be used, or multiple devices may be used in series. In addition, the magnetic sifter may be used in connection with a detection chamber.

摘要: A draft force sensor is provided for a coupling member coupled between a towing vehicle and a towed earth engaging implement, such as a scraper. The draft force sensor includes first and second bores extending through the coupling member. Each bore has a horizontal axis which extends perpendicular to a main fore-and-aft axis of the coupling member. The second bore is positioned above the first bore and spaced apart from the first bore. Each of the bores is surrounded by an outer cylindrical wall. Four electrical strain gauges are spaced apart and placed on the wall of each of the bores. A center line bisects an axis line which extends between the axes of the first and second bores. The axis of each bore is spaced apart from the center line by a distance which is less than a diameter of the bores. The strain gauges are connected electrically in a circuit which generates a draft force signal in response to draft forces applied to the coupling member.

摘要: The present invention provides methods for rapidly identifying and distinguishing between different DNA sequences utilizing short tandem repeat (STR) analysis and DNA microarrays. Specifically, these methods facilitate the deduction of a target molecule's identity, length, and number of STRs. In an embodiment, a labeled STR target sequence is hybridized to a DNA microarray carrying complementary probes. These probes vary in length to cover the range of possible STRs. The labeled single-stranded regions of the DNA hybrids are selectively removed from the microarray surface utilizing a post-hybridization enzymatic digestion. The number of repeats in the unknown target is deduced based on the pattern of target DNA that remains hybridized to the microarray. The DNA profiling techniques described herein are useful for performing forensic analysis to uniquely identify individual humans or other species.
