摘要： Compositions and methods are provided for generating islet-like cell clusters. The methods include culturing a whole non-islet pancreatic cell discard or cells sorted therefrom with an effective amount of a molecule having Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMP) activity (e.g., a BMP polypeptide). The effective amount of said molecule having BMP activity (e.g., BMP polypeptide) is sufficient to induce the formation of islet-like cell clusters. The methods further include treating or attenuating insulin-deficiency disorders, including type 1 diabetes. In one non-limiting embodiment, an insulin-deficiency disorder in a subject is treated or attenuated by culturing a whole non-islet pancreatic cell discard or cells sorted therefrom with an effective amount of a molecule having BMP activity (e.g., a BMP polypeptide) such that tho formation of islet-like cell clusters occurs. A therapeutically effective amount of the islet-like cell clusters which produce insulin are then transplanted into a subject in need to treat the insulin-deficiency disorder.

摘要： Disclosed and claimed are: a composition including at least one glycosaminoglycan, e.g., CIS, at least one perfluorinated substance and at least one alginate, e.g., sodium alginate, wherein: the at least one glycosaminoglycan and/or the perfluorinated substance and/or the alginate are cross-linked or polymerized, e.g., the alginate is cross-linked or polymerized, for instance by addition of an inorganic salt, such as a calcium salt; or the at least one glycosaminoglycan, the perfluorinated substance and the alginate are covalently bound, e.g., by means of a coupling reaction involving a linker molecule such as DVS; or the at least one glycosaminoglycan and/or the perfluorinated substance and/or the alginate are cross-linked or polymerized, e.g., the alginate is cross-linked or polymerized, for instance by addition of an inorganic salt, such as a calcium salt, and the at least one glycosaminoglycan and the alginate are covalently bound, e.g., by means of a coupling reaction involving a linker molecule such as DVS, and the covalent binding can have been performed prior to cross-linking or polymerizing or vice versa; and, gels comprising the composition; mixtures of such gels or of at least one such gel and at least one such composition; and, methods for making and using such compositions and gels, including products therefrom such as “paints”, sprays, matrices, beads, microcapsules.

摘要： A health-related emergency mobile alert system to facilitate communication, care and intervention during critical events. The system communicates with medical monitors, which measure and collect a subject's physiological data and vital signs information. A service provider maintains a database with the subject's medical records and an emergency contact list. When a critical event is detected, a two-way mobile communication device that is configured to communicate with the medical monitor transmits the physiological data and location coordinates of the subject to the service provider, and a conference call with members of the emergency contact list is initiated to help facilitate aid to the subject. The two-way mobile communication device may include a speaker and GPS technology. It may also include self-activating features wherein pre-recorded messages conveying potential dangers are transmitted to the subject when the subject's physiological data and vital signs reflect precarious levels.

摘要： A perifusion device includes at least one sample container for cells, the sample container having an inlet and an outlet. The container receives test liquid through the inlet and discharges the liquid through the outlet. A manifold having a plurality of liquid inlets, control valves, and liquid outlets can be provided. A receptacle housing has a plurality of receptacles. A drive is connected to the receptacle housing for moving the receptacle housing. A programmable controller can be provided to control movement of the receptacle housing. The test liquid includes at least one stimuli for the cells. The liquid collected in the receptacles is analyzed to determine the response of the cells to the stimuli.
