A matrix wiring unit is arranged opposite the photoelectric conversion elements so as not to cross the signal lines extending from the capacitors. The matrix wiring unit matrix transfers the signals from the capacitors. A switch array unit includes a first switch unit for sequentially transferring the matrix transferred signals, and a first readout device for reading out, as a voltage signal, the signals transferred by the first switch section. The switch array also includes a second switch unit arranged in correspondence with the first switch unit and operated synchronously therewith. The second switch unit receives signals corresponding to noise. A second readout device reads out, as a voltage signal, the output from the second switch unit. A differential amplifier is included for receiving the outputs from the first and second readout devices and outputs a signal corresponding to a difference therebetween.

A method for recording and/or reproducing images includes a step of performing a two dimensional scanning on a recording medium with a probe electrode which relatively returns in the X direction for the main scanning and in the Y direction for sub-scanning. The main scanning of the probe is performed at a frequency which is one positive integerth of the horizontal synchronous frequency of the image signal so as to enable the period required for returning of the probe electrode to be matched with the blanking period of the image signal. Thus, it is possible to avoid any data recording and reproducing operations during the period required for returning of the scanning probe electrode.

A distance between the probe electrode and the recording medium is controlled by applying a voltage therebetween. A current flowing through the probe electrode upon application of the voltage is detected while the scanning is performed with the probe electrode over the recording medium. A correlation between a signal output according to the current detection and a reference signal is obtained to produce a reproduction signal from which a noise component due to an influence of an atomic step present on a surface of the recording medium is removed. The reproduction of information is effected in accordance with the generated reproduction signal.
