The present invention provides a process for producing a diantimony pentoxide sol, characterized in that a diantimony pentoxide sol having a particle size of 5 to 30 nm is used as a nuclear sol and the sol is grown to an arbitrary particle size, preferably a particle size of 40 to 300 nm. The process comprises adding a hydrogen peroxide solution and diantimony trioxide into a sol comprising diantimony pentoxide particles as a raw material, and coating the diantimony pentoxide particles with a resulting antimony compound, preferably diantimony pentoxide. In the process, the coating is preferably carried out in such a manner that a particle size of particles in a sol as a raw material increases by a factor of 1.3 to 60.

It is intended to provide a stable sol containing zirconium oxide-tin oxide composite colloids to be used for improving the performance such as abrasion resistance, transparency, adhesiveness, water resistance or weather resistance of a dried film obtained by applying a hard coating agent containing colloidal particles to the surface of plastic lens. A production method includes the steps of obtaining a sol containing colloidal particles (A1) in which the surface of particles in a sol containing hydrothermally-processed zirconium oxide-tin oxide composite colloids (A) is coated with amine-containing Sb2O5 colloidal particles; obtaining a sol containing colloids (A2) coated with amine-containing Sb2O5 colloidal particles by performing a hydrothermal treatment at a temperature of from 200 to 350° C.; and mixing the sol containing the colloidal particles (A2) and a sol containing tungsten oxide-tin oxide-silicon dioxide composite colloidal particles (B2) and aging the resulting aqueous medium at 20 to 100° C.

There is provided a stable sol comprising modified stannic oxide-zirconium oxide complex colloidal particles, wherein the particles are formed by coating as nuclei stannic oxide-zirconium oxide complex colloidal particles in which stannic oxide colloidal particles obtained by a reaction of metal tin, an organic acid and hydrogen peroxide is bonded to zirconium oxide colloidal particles with tungsten oxide-stannic oxide-silicon dioxide complex colloidal particles. The sol has a high refractive index and is improved in water resistance, moisture resistance and weather resistance, and can be used by mixing with a hard coating paint as a component for improving properties of a hard coating film applied on a plastic lens surface.

The method for producing a plastic lens of the present invention comprises forming a hard coat film by coating a plastic substrate with a coating composition comprising (A) modified colloid particles of a stannic oxide-zirconium oxide composite having diameters of 4.5 to 60 nm which are formed by coating the surface of nuclei with colloid particles of a tungsten oxide-stannic oxide-silicon dioxide composite having diameters of 2 to 7 nm, a ratio of amounts by weight of WO3/SnO2 of 0.1 to 100 and a ratio of amounts by weight of SiO2/SnO2 of 0.1 to 100 using as the nuclei colloid particles of a stannic oxide-zirconium oxide composite having diameters of 4 to 50 nm and a structure formed by bonding colloid particles of stannic oxide obtained by reaction of metallic tin, an organic acid and hydrogen peroxide and colloid particles of zirconium oxide to each other in amounts such that a ratio of amounts by weight of the oxides of ZrO2/SnO2 is 0.02 to 1.0 and (B) an organosilicon compound. The method provides a plastic lens having a hard coat film exhibiting improved scratch resistance and a great refractive index without adverse effects on various properties such as the property of preventing yellowing under irradiation with ultraviolet light and adhesion.
