Small, fast, and inexpensive in-line spectrophotometers can produce in-line spectrums of a substrate before or after printing on the substrate. In-line spectrums are generally far less complete than a reference spectrum produced with a large, slow, and expensive reference spectrophotometer. An in-line spectrum can be mapped to a reference spectrum using a variety of known algorithms. However, the mapping is erroneous when the media substrate type changes. Reference transform matrices and in-line transform matrices can correct the erroneous mapping.

A capability is included in a color image forming device store and/or update multiple sets of special process parameter setpoints defining a plurality of CRDs each of which may be identified and associated with a specific color in order that requests to print out-of-gamut colors may be satisfied routinely as exceptions to a nominal gamut based on a nominal set of stored setpoints when a CRD is selected and the setpoints associated with that CRD are input for reference by the color image forming device on a temporary basis.

Provided is a method for enabling accurate and consistent imaging of selected colors within a document for various printing device configurations utilizing an automated spot color editor. The method includes determining appropriate target values for a selected color within a print job. The automated spot color editor modifies or adjusts the selected color by selecting a quality level, in the form of a color difference metric, and a maximum number of iterations, which is the maximum number of times the automated spot color editor is operated to calculate a CMYK color formula. Sample patch(es) are printed and analyzed for the selected target value and a CMYK color formula based on the color composition of the sample patch is calculated. The CMYK color formula is inserted into a spot color editing table. Through a graphical user interface, an operator may review the color formula for acceptance.

A Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) based Fabry-Perot array may be used as a spectral filter to light sensing array, such as a CCD or CMOS photodetector. Applying different voltages to the electrodes of individual Fabry-Perot cells within the array allows a gradient in the Fabry-Perot air gap across the Fabry-Perot array. In this manner the MEMS Fabry-Perot array serves as a spectral filter of light passing through the Fabry-Perot array to the photodetector array. Embodiments of the disclosed sensor, used with LEDs that emit light outside the photosensitivity range of a photoreceptor belt, may be used to measure spectral information from toned patches and/or images placed upon a photoreceptor belt within a marking system. Other embodiments of the disclosed senor, used with LEDs that emit light of any wavelength, may be used to measure spectral information from toned patches or images placed by a marking system upon a non-photosensitive output substrate, such as an intermediate belt or paper.

A desired response in device independent color space is normally obtained by employing a cascade consisting of a characterization transform and calibration transform. The calibration transform transforms input control variables into output control variables that are directly used to drive the device. Input control variables can be transformed into intermediate control variables, which can be then mapped to output control variables utilizing a two-dimensional transformation. The two-dimensional calibration architecture provides improved control functionality and flexibility.

Reflectance values are obtained from the first and second test patches. A set of gray balanced tone reproduction curves are obtained based on the reflectance values of the first test patches, and a set of spatial gray balanced tone reproduction curves are obtained based on the reflectance values of the second test patches.

The method includes receiving image data input, in either device-dependent color space or device-independent color space, for a marking job. It is determined whether spot colors are present within the image data input and whether the CMYK values for each of the spot colors present within the image data input are included in the marking device spot color dictionary. Operational parameters for the automated spot color editor are initialized, with operational parameters including the desired performance criteria to be minimized by the automated spot color editor through selection of one or more matrices from a plurality of possible gain matrices to identify new CMYK values. The quality level of the new CMYK values is assessed and new CMYK values are transmitted to image printing device(s).

Methods and systems in an image processing device for controlling colors that are located external to a gamut are disclosed. A plurality of color values can be automatically provided as input to said image processing device, wherein said image processing device is under a control of a particular dimensional order, typically a three-dimensional order, but alternatively can be a two-dimensional order. Next, an operation can be performed dynamically determining which color value among the plurality of color values has attained a gamut limit. Thereafter, the particular dimensional order can be automatically reduced, thereby providing improved control for colors that are located external to said gamut. The plurality of color values analyzed is generally associated with three colors—cyan, magenta, and yellow.
