An engine starting apparatus with an antitheft function enables rapid and secure starting of a kick-started engine. The engine starting apparatus includes an immobilizer CPU and an ignition CPU, which cooperate to enable authorized engine startup and to prevent unauthorized access. The immobilizer CPU outputs a permission signal if an authentication code from the outside corresponds to a reference code in a vehicle, but outputs an inhibition signal if the authentication code and the reference code fail to correspond. When a starting pedal is kicked, the ignition CPU begins to energize the engine's ignition system, in response to a predetermined engine starting instruction, before the input reference code is verified. If proper authentication is verified by the permission signal, the ignition CPU continues to allow normal engine starting procedure. If the inhibition signal is received from the immobilizer CPU, the ignition CPU interrupts the normal procedure and inhibits engine starting.

The ABS is provided with a modulator, and when the ABS is activated, control of the caliper pressure by the driver, is modified by the operation of the modulator having the aforementioned inlet valve (normally closed to a pressurized fluid source) and aforementioned outlet valve (normally open to a fluid exit), both controlled by the above-described control logic circuit. The modulator increases or decreases the caliper pressure, in response to changes in the pressurized fluid, regulated by such valves. Depending on the operation of the control logic circuit described above, three events may occur. When the inlet and outlet valves are not operated (i.e. their normal state), the modulator releases pressurized fluid through the output valve, and increases caliper pressure, to increase braking up to a predetermined maximum. If only the outlet valve is operated (i.e. both the inlet and outlet valves are closed), the modulator remains in a constant state and likewise, the caliper pressure is kept constant. The rotation-angular-position detecting apparatus includes a second rotor which rotates in a rotation interlocked with a first rotor with a plurality of first detection members formed at equal intervals in a rotational direction of the first rotor at a predetermined speed ratio with respect to the first rotor, and has a plurality of second detection members formed at unequal intervals in a rotational direction of the second rotor. A second pickup is provided for generating a second detection signal when sensing the proximity of any one of the second detection members on the second rotor. In the rotation-angular-position detecting apparatus, generation of the second detection signal from the second pickup is detected for each generation of the first detection signal from the first pickup due to a rotation of the first rotor. A plurality of specific rotation angular positions of the first rotor are each determined in accordance with a plurality of results of detection obtained so far including a result of the detection of the generation of the second detection signal obtained this time. The number of times the first detection signal is generated after any one of the specific rotation angular positions has been determined is counted to determine a rotation angular position of the first rotor other than the specific rotation angular positions.

A half rate mobile telecommunication unit capable of increasing for example a channel capacity can therefore be released on the market early without waiting for the completion of the entire system on the network side. When the network side system is completed, the potential half rate functions of the mobile telecommunication unit are revealed all at once. The large number of already sold half rate mobile telecommunication units of high frequency utilization efficiency consequently improve the efficiency of channel utilization greatly.
