摘要: An electrically-heated catalytic converter comprises a catalyst support which produces heat when electric current is applied, a holding mat made of an electrical insulating material, the holding mat being provided so as to cover an outer circumference of the catalyst support, and a case which houses the catalyst support and holds the catalyst support via the holding mat. The catalytic converter treats gas flowing in the case by a catalyst supported on the catalyst support. The holding mat has a water-absorbing property. An insulation layer made of an electrical insulating material is provided between the case and the holding mat.

The catalyst may include a carrier; more than two comb-shaped electrode portions extending in a longitudinal direction; an electrically conductive underlying layer provided between the carrier and the comb-shaped electrode portions; and more than two electrically conductive fixing layers bonding to at least one of the comb-shaped electrode portions and to the underlying layer to fix the comb-shaped electrode portions to the carrier at more than two points spaced apart.

摘要: A turbine housing of a turbocharger is formed by joining a scroll body with a base body. An exhaust passageway is formed between the scroll body and the base body. At the joint portion between the scroll body and the base body, an inside corner portion is formed by an inner peripheral surface of the scroll body that faces the exhaust passageway, and an outer peripheral surface of the base body that also faces the exhaust passageway. An inside fillet that is shaped to change the direction of exhaust gas along the inner peripheral surface of the scroll body to a direction along the outer peripheral surface of the base body is formed on the inside corner portion.

摘要: Disclosed is an exhaust air purification device, which enables heating a carrier uniformly and heating a catalyst supported on the carrier above an active temperature thereof even when an engine is run on a cold-start mode. Specifically disclosed is an exhaust air purification device, which includes a hollow case as an exterior, a cylindrical carrier housed in the case and having a catalyst supported thereon, and a pair of electrodes arranged on the outer circumferential surface of the carrier. In the device, the carrier is electrically heated through the pair of electrodes so that the catalyst is heated to an active temperature thereof. In the device, each of the pair of electrodes is placed on an arc-shaped outer circumferential segment of the carrier that has a central angle of 20 to 40 degrees, and the electrodes are opposed to each other with the phase difference of 180 degrees.

摘要: A control apparatus for a solenoid-operated valve that functions as an intake or exhaust valve of an internal combustion engine includes a lower spring biasing a valve body of the valve in a valve closing direction and upper and lower coils disposed above and below an armature for generating electromagnetic forces to move the valve body in the valve closing and valve opening directions. After a request for closing of the valve body is made, command currents are supplied to the upper and lower coils in suitable timing to increase the speed at which the valve body is seated against a valve seat. As the valve body rotates about its axis due to the action of the lower spring in the course of moving toward the valve seat, it is possible to crush and remove carbon between the valve body and the valve seat without causing local wear of the valve body.

摘要: The present invention offers a valve driving apparatus provided in an internal combustion engine. The valve driving apparatus drives an exhaust valve by using electromagnetic force. The exhaust valve is movable between an open position and a closed position. The valve driving apparatus includes an armature coupled with the exhaust valve, an electromagnetic coil for generating an electromagnetic force exerted on the exhaust valve, and a control means for controlling the electromagnetic force applied to the armature in the direction of the closed position of the exhaust valve when the exhaust valve is moving to the open position, in the fuel injection cut control, that is, combustion is suspended in the internal combustion engine. The present invention also offers a method for driving the exhaust valve, which comprises the steps of driving the electric current through the electromagnetic coil, biasing the armature and controlling the electromagnetic force applied to the armature.

摘要: The present invention relates to an electromagnetically driven valve suited for use in an internal combustion engine and aims at achieving appropriate operating characteristics in accordance with operating conditions of the internal combustion engine at the time of opening or closing a valve body. An armature moving together with the valve body is provided and upper and lower cores are disposed on opposed sides of the armature. The upper core and the lower core accommodate upper and lower coils, respectively. An annular protrusion, formed not on the upper core but on the lower core only, has an inner diameter slightly larger than an outer diameter of the armature.

摘要: A variable valve timing mechanism of an internal combustion engine varies the rotational phase of a driven shaft with respect to a drive shaft to vary the timing of the valve. The mechanism includes a first rotary member for a rotation in synchronism with the drive shaft and a second rotary member for a rotation in synchronism with the driven shaft. The second rotary member has a vane. The movement of the vane rotates the second rotary member with respect to the first rotary member to change the rotational phase of the driven shaft with respect to the drive shaft. Hydraulic pressure is supplied to one of the first hydraulic chamber and the second hydraulic chamber to move the vane. A lock member locks the second rotary member to the first rotary member to fix the rotational phase of the driven shaft with respect to the drive shaft. The lock member is held in a locked position when the engine is not running. The lock member is moved to an unlocked position by the hydraulic pressure when the engine reaches a predetermined running condition. The hydraulic pressure maintains the lock member in the unlocked position.

摘要: A second recirculation passage recirculates blow-by gas at an upstream section, which is upstream of an impeller of a turbocharger in an intake passage. A first passage branches and extends from a downstream section, which is downstream of the impeller in the intake passage. A second passage that forms part of the second recirculation passage connects the first passage and the upstream section to each other. A third passage, which is provided separately from the second passage, connects the first passage and the upstream section to each other. A change mechanism changes, in different manners, the flow rate of compressed gas recirculating to the upstream section through the second passage, and the flow rate of compressed gas recirculating to the upstream section through the third passage.
