A solvent based coating composition containing a binding agent, the binding agent comprising: (a) 10 to 80 wt.% of at least one hydroxyfunctional polyester formed by reacting a mixture comprising: (i) 10 to 40 mol.% of a 2,2-dialkylalkanediol with two primary OH groups; (ii) 10 to 30 mol.% of a polyol with at least one secondary OH group; (iii) 20 to 50 mol.% of an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic dicarboxylic acid with fewer than 16 C atoms or anhydrides thereof; (iv) 5 to 30 mol.% of a compound selected from the group consisting of dimeric fatty acids, dimeric diols, epsilon-caprolactone, and mixtures thereof; (v) 1 to 15 mol.% of a hydroxycarboxylic acid with at least one hydroxy group and at least one carboxyl group; and (b) 10 to 80 wt.% of a (meth)acrylic copolymer containing a hydroxyl group; and (c) 10 to 60 wt.% of a crosslinking agent; wherein the sum of the wt.% of components (a)-(c) is 100% of the binding agent.

A pigment dispersion and its use for the preparation of coating compounds are described. The dispersion contains a pigment, solvent and pigment dispersing agent. The pigment dispersing agent is a copolymer containing OH groups, obtainable by the reaction of:(A) 80 to 95% by weight of a copolymer of:(a) 0.5 to 40% by weight of N,N-di-Cl to 4-alkylamino-C.sub.1 to .sub.8 -alkyl(meth)acrylamides and/or a mixture of N,N-di-C to 4-alkylamino-C.sub.1 to 8 -alkyl(meth)acrylates and N-substituted (meth)acrylamides and/or (meth)acrylamide in which the ratio of amino(meth)acrylates to amido(meth)acrylates should be in the range of from 1:2 to 2:1,(b) 10 to 40% by weight of hydroxy-C.sub.2-8 -alkyl (meth)acrylates and(c) 20 to 89.5% by weight of copolymerizable, .alpha., .beta.-olefinically unsaturated compounds with(B) 5 to 20% by weight of a polyisocyanate containing unmasked and optionally also masked isocyanate groups as well as biuret, urethane or isocyanurate groups.

The invention concerns a binder suitable for clear or pigmented coating agents. Binders based on copolymers containing hydroxyl groups have hitherto a high solvent content. The solids content of the new binders is improved without affecting the viscosity; gloss, body, flow and processing properties of coatings containing the new binders are improved. The binders consist essentially of a copolymer containing hydroxyl groups, made from specific quantities of styrol, tertbutacrylate, isobutyl methacrylate, 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate, 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate, butanediol-1, 4-monoacrylate, acrylic acid and glycidyl esters of .alpha.-alkylalkane monocarboxylic acids and/or .alpha.,.alpha.-dialkylalkane monocarboxylic acids.

The present invention is directed to a coating composition for use as topcoat lacquer on a multi-layer lacquer coating for substrates such as automobile bodies and parts. The coating composition is based upon a combination of hydroxyl-functional methacrylic copolymers, carboxy-functional blocked urethane prepolymers, crosslinking agents and optional hydroxyl-functional polyesters. The carboxy-functional polyurethane prepolymer is formed from a combination of organic diols, polycarboxylic acids, polyols, hydroxyl-carboxylic acids, aliphatic or aryl polyisocyanates and monofunctional isocyanate blocking agents. The lacquer coating according to the invention has a high sulfuric acid resistance and has a high solids content.
