    摘要: A method of operating a liquid crystal cell includes DC-balancing by displaying an inverse image with electric fields of increased magnitude relative to the image producing electric fields. While the inverse image is displayed the image is prevented from being visible by either turning off the light source or re-directing or blocking the light from reaching the viewing area. The image producing electric fields and the inverse image producing electric fields are such that the cumulative time integral of the electric fields that are present in one direction across the liquid crystal material is substantially equal to the cumulative time integral of the electric fields that are present in the opposite direction during the given period of time during the operation of liquid crystal cell. The time duration of the inverse image portion is shorter than the time duration of the image portion by an amount proportional to the increased magnitude of the additional electric fields. Because of the shorter time period when no image is visible, the system brightness is increased.

    摘要: A variable optical attenuator having a multiple quantum well structure (MQWS), a feedback system that provides a feedback signal, and a current control that utilizes the feedback signal to regulate the attenuation of the MQWS. In one embodiment, the MQWS is part of a photo intrinsic diode, and in another embodiment it is part of a self-electro-optic effect device (SEED). Preferably, there are a plurality of MQWSs, which may be arranged in a serial stack or may be arranged in a plane parallel to the MQWS layers, with light passed from one MQWS to the next via prisms. Preferably, the beam is separated into component wavelengths by a demultiplexer, each wavelength is attenuated by one or more MQWSs designed to attenuate that wavelength, and the beam is then recombined with an optical multiplexer. In another embodiment, the attenuator is combined with an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) to provide an amplifier having an essentially flat gain as a function of wavelength.

    摘要: An optical device includes a ferroelectric liquid crystal material. This optical device has a first and a second substrate. A first alignment treatment is applied to a surface of the first substrate, the first alignment treatment being intended to induce an orientation of at least a portion of the ferroelectric liquid crystal material along a first alignment direction with a first pretilt angle α1 with respect to a plane parallel to the first substrate. A second alignment treatment is applied to a surface of the second substrate, the second alignment treatment being intended to induce an orientation of at least another portion of the ferroelectric liquid crystal material along a second alignment direction with a second pretilt angle α2 with respect to a plane parallel to the second substrate. The optical device further includes an arrangement for securing the first substrate with respect to the second substrate in such a way that the surfaces of the first and second substrates onto which the first and second alignment treatments were applied, respectively, are spaced apart, generally parallel and facing each other. In addition, a projection of the first alignment direction onto the treated surface of the first substrate makes a non-zero angle Ω with respect to a projection of the second alignment direction onto the treated surface of the first substrate such that, the ferroelectric liquid crystal material being injected between the first and second substrates, the optical device is free of chevron structures without a need to otherwise apply an additional treatment to the optical device.

    摘要: Self-compensating, quasi-homeotropic liquid crystal devices overcome the contrast reducing effects of smaller pretilt angles. The devices exhibit extremely high contrast ratio but at the same time suppress fringe field-induced disclination lines in high pixel density and small pixel size quasi-homeotropic displays. The surface pretilt and cell twist angles are set at values that, in combination, contribute to establishing a cuspate singularity in the contrast ratio for normally incident light in response to a drive signal switching the liquid crystal device to the OFF director field state that provides nearly 0% optical efficiency. The OFF director field state corresponds to a subthreshold drive level that provides for the liquid crystal device self-compensation for in-plane optical retardation. Setting the cell gap (“d”) to provide substantially 100% optical efficiency in response to a value of the drive signal switching the liquid crystal device to the ON director field state achieves optimal dynamic range for the liquid crystal device.
