In some antenna phase beamforming strategies, a diagonal beamforming matrix in which the diagonal elements have a constant magnitude may be employed. Accordingly, a beamforming system may be utilized with few feedback information bits being transmitted from the beamformee; such a system may also minimize or eliminate power fluctuations among multiple transmit antennae.

The first plurality of decision metrics is grouped into sequential portions. A plurality of combined versions of the sequential portions is stored into combining buffers arranged in sequence. Each combined version is associated with a different sequence of timing information. A first of the plurality of combined versions stored in a first of the combining buffers is combined with a second version of a second plurality of decision metrics that corresponds to a second repetition of the periodic decoding information. The second version is associated with timing information adjacent in the timing information sequence to the timing information associated with the first combined version. The data is decoded based on information in the combining buffers.

Systems and methods are provided for determining a channel quality indicator (CQI) in a transmission system associated with a diversity transmission scheme. A plurality of independent diversity branches are identified in the diversity transmission scheme. Each one of the independent diversity branches may correspond to a different portion of the effective channel and may include any suitable combination of frequency, time, and/or spatial components of the effective channel or of any wired or wireless paths or combinations of the same. An effective Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) value is computed for each one of the identified independent diversity branches. The computed effective SNR values are combined for the identified independent diversity branches to generate a CQI value.

In an embodiment, an estimate of the set of message bits may be determined using a minimum-distance detector or an optimal-ML detector, for example, depending on the signal-to-noise and/or signal-to-interference ratios at a receiver.

Systems and methods are provided for channel estimation using linear phase estimation. These systems and methods enable improved channel estimation by estimating a linear channel phase between received pilot subcarrier signals. The estimated linear phase can then be removed from the received pilot subcarrier signals. After the estimated linear phase is removed from the received pilot subcarrier signals, a channel response can be estimated. A final estimated channel response can be generated by multiplying the results of the linear channel estimation by the estimated linear phase.

Methods and systems are provided for searching for a codeword from a plurality of codewords in a codebook for use in precoding, for example, as used in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission system. Tree search and recursive algorithm techniques may be utilized to reduce the complexity and enhance the efficiency of the codebook search. Distance values may be determined between an optimal codeword and codewords in a codebook. The distance values may be accumulated for a group of the k-best codewords. Additionally or alternatively, a codeword from the codebook may be removed from consideration if the codeword meets a stop rule condition. A codeword may be selected from the codebook based on a minimum distance value from the optimal codeword.
