A method is proposed in which the injection pump, having been adjusted in terms of the supply quantity and of the supply onset, is provided on a test bench, before being mounted on the internal combustion engine, with an electric pulse transducer, whose mounted position is marked on the injection pump. The pump may also be corrected, at a fixed test rpm, to a set-point value fixed relative to the supply onset signal by means of measuring the signal distance between the supply onset signal of a signal transducer measuring the dynamic supply onset and the rotary-position signal of the pulse transducer. The injection pump, with the camshaft rotated into the rotary position associated with the dynamic supply onset, is mounted on the engine which has been brought with its crankshaft into the associated working position. For testing and if needed correcting the mounted position of the injection pump on the engine, only the signal distance between the rotary-position signal and a dead-center signal of a dead-center transducer secured on the engine is tested and corrected if needed to a fixed set-point value. This measurement can be performed with a conventionally available ignition angle testing device.

An apparatus is proposed for positionally fixing a drive shaft disposed in a fuel injection pump for internal combustion engines in a predetermined rotary position, in particular one associated with the onset of fuel supply, and for measuring and testing this rotary position. The apparatus is provided with an apparatus into the reception bore of which either a holder element or an electric pulse transducer can be inserted. An element firmly connected with the drive shaft is provided with an angle-indicator marking, which is equipped both as a coupling element for the position-fixing apparatus and as a pulse trigger for the pulse transducer. The apparatus can thus be used both as a locking apparatus for mounting the injection pump on the engine and, with the pulse transducer inserted, as a measurement and testing apparatus.

A centrifugal force speed governor for fuel injected internal combustion engines having at least a negative adjustment capability. In such a centrifugal force speed governor the following structural components are included: speed responsive structure; at least one adaptation spring; an adjustment member; an intermediate lever; a yield support; a control element; a stop; an energy storing structure; and a setting lever having a pin mounted thereto. The adjustment member is coupled to the speed responsive structure, the adaptation spring, the control element and through the control element to the yield support, while the setting lever engages, with its pin, the intermediate lever, the control element and the energy storing structure. When the adjustment member is displaced by the speed responsive structure and under the regulation of the adaptation spring, a displacement of the intermediate lever via the control element and the setting lever pin occurs. This displacement of the intermediate lever is transferred to a fuel supply rate adjustment member of a fuel injection pump to which the intermediate lever is coupled, producing a negative adjustment of the fuel supply rate adjustment member, i.e., an adjustment which is in the direction of increasing fuel supply as the angular speed of the governor increases.

The adjusting device has an adjusting cylinder, which is directed parallel to the pump cylinder and is accommodated in the housing of the injection pump, and adjusting piston and a restoring spring and adjusts a control sleeve, which opens the pump piston provided with at least one control recess in the longitudinal direction of the pump piston. This orientation and disposition of the adjusting cylinder effects a space-saving and inexpensive design of the injection pump and improves the precision of adjustment. The adjusting piston and the control sleeve may be directed coaxially and embodied as a single component, as a result of which a further space saving and increase in adjustment precision are attained.

The fuel injection quantity of a fuel injection apparatus provided with a fuel injection pump is electrically regulated by means of the opening duration of a metering valve. Additionally, a shift in the instant of supply onset controlled in accordance with operating characteristics is attained by means of a change in the return-flow fuel quantity, which is diverted into a refill reservoir and then refilled completely into the pump work chamber by the beginning of the next subsequent injection stroke. Serving as the sole connection between the refill reservoir and a pump work chamber is an overflow conduit, which is opened by two control locations on the pump piston at the end of a supply and shortly prior to the bottom dead center. Both the pump cylinder with the pressure valve and the refill reservoir and the metering valve are inserted in a leak-fuel-proof manner in a cylinder head of the pump housing, which is embodied in two parts. The decreased idle volume, the reduction of possible leakage points, and the complete refilling of the return-flow fuel quantity assure that the fuel injection quantity is determined unequivocally by the opening duration of the metering valves.

With this apparatus, emergency operation if the electric control system for the fuel injection quantity fails can be attained, without the apparatus for emergency operation interfering with fuel metering by the closed-loop control device. In particular, the fixed throttle prevents racing of the engine counter to the intentions of the driver in the event that the closed-loop control system fails.

Fuel injection nozzle for internal combustion engines includes a first closing spring which acts continuously on the valve needle by means of a central pressure pin and, in addition, a second closing spring which acts continuously on the valve needle by means of a pressure piece after covering the distance of an initial stroke. The pressure piece is supported at the nozzle body by means of an intermediate bush during the initial stroke. The initial stroke is limited by means of the shoulders at the valve needle and the intermediate bush, whereas the total stroke is limited by means of the shoulders at the intermediate bush and the intermediate disk. Accordingly, the initial stroke can be adjusted very accurately to a desired magnitude merely by means of grinding the valve needle and does not change during the assembly of the injection nozzle.

A fuel injection apparatus for internal combustion engines in which beyond a predetermined remaining stroke during the supply stroke of the pump piston, a relief conduit is opened via a control edge. The same control edge closes the relief conduit once again during the intake stroke. During the subsequent effective intake stroke, the quantity of fuel to be injected upon the following compression stroke is metered by means of the electrically actuatable valve. The magnetic valve here is already opened before the closure of the relief conduit by the control edge, so that in the opening phase of the relief conduit, the pump work chamber of the fuel injection apparatus is flushed. In this manner, precise metering of the quantity of fuel to be injected is attained.
