The plunger, which is formed of a high thermal expansion, high hardness ceramic with a thermal expansion coefficient preferably greater than 6.times.10.sup.-6 /.degree. C. and a hardness preferably greater than 800 Kg/mM.sup.2, maintains a desired optimum minimal diametral clearance while avoiding excessive fuel leakage and efficient plunger function without scuffing or sticking under the high axial, side and pressure loads and variable quality fuels encountered in the fuel system operating environment. Preferred high thermal expansion, high hardness ceramics are zirconia, alumina-zirconia and alumina.

A high pressure pump which has a working chamber, which on the one hand, is connected to a low pressure circuit via a solenoid valve and on the other hand, is connected to a high pressure reservoir via a check valve. The solenoid valve has a spring-loaded closing body, which cooperates with a valve seat and together with it, constitutes the check valve. When the magnet is without current, the check function of the closing body is switched off via a valve tappet of the solenoid valve so that even with an initial working stroke of the high pressure pump, the connection to the low pressure circuit is maintained. Only with a supply of current to the solenoid valve executed during the working stroke does the valve tappet allow the closing body to contact its valve seat, whereupon the high pressure delivery then begins. The high pressure pump is designated for use in fuel injection systems of diesel motor vehicle engines.

A high pressure fuel pump unit and assembly is provided which includes a pump barrel containing a bore, a pump plunger mounted in the bore for reciprocal movement between an advanced position and a retracted position, and a force transmitting device for transmitting axial loads to the plunger while minimizing side loads on the plunger. The force transmitting device includes an extension member extending into the inner radial extent of a bias spring and including a distal supporting end positioned in uncoupled abutment against a driven end of the pump plunger to form a decoupled force transmitting interface. The pump plunger and extension member are capable of relative lateral movement at the decoupled force transmitting interface which is positioned a spaced axial distance from the outer end of the pump barrel when the pump plunger is in the advanced position. The extension member is specifically formed with a predetermined axial length to minimize the spaced axial distance between the outer end of the pump barrel and the decouple force transmitting interface so as to minimize the leverage effect of any side loading and maximize the support provided to plunger by barrel throughout reciprocation of the plunger. The distal supporting end of the extension member may include a flat surface positioned in a single bearing plane wherein the extension member is positioned entirely on one side of the bearing plane to minimize the spaced axial distance.

The control of the end of supply is achieved via an oblique control recess in the piston jacket face, which recess communicates with the pump work chamber, and which is embodied by two oblique grooves, which are offset from each other, whose edges toward the pump work chamber form a first oblique control edge, and a second oblique control edge separated from the first oblique edge by a shoulder; the distance between the second oblique control edge and the second face-end control edge disposed above it in the region of the shoulder is less than the diameter of the control opening, so that a zero supply quantity region is formed without sharply reducing the control path region on the pump piston.
