A composition useful as a thermal barrier coating on a superalloy substrate intended for use in hostile thermal environments. The coating comprises zirconia stabilized in a predominately tetragonal phase. The composition includes a ceramic component consisting essentially of zirconia (ZrO2) or a combination of zirconia and hafnia (HfO2) and a stabilizer component comprising, in combination, a first co-stabilizer selected from YbO1.5, HoO1.5, ErO1.5, TmO1.5, LuO1.5, and combinations thereof, and optionally YO1.5, a second co-stabilizer selected from TiO2, PdO2, VO2, GeO2, and combinations thereof, and a third co-stabilizer comprising TaO2.5. The stabilizer component is present in an amount effective to achieve the predominantly tetragonal phase in the coating.

A coated article is disclosed for use in a high temperature a gas turbine. The coated article can include an yttria-stabilized zirconia, a pentavalent oxide first dopant, and an oxide second dopant. The ratio of the pentavalent oxide second dopant to the oxide third dopant can be less than or equal to about 1. The composition can reduce sintering of the thermal barrier coating.

A method of manufacturing a transparent sintered ceramic material, comprising the steps of combining amounts of yttrium oxide powder with aluminum oxide powder, forming the mixture into a desired shape, and sintering the oxide powder mixture. Combining the amounts of yttrium oxide powder with aluminum oxide powder forms an oxide powder mixture. The yttrium oxide powder has a particle surface area of about 9 m2 per gram to about 36 m2 per gram and the aluminum oxide powder has a particle surface area of about 3 m2 per gram to about 30 m2 per gram. Sintering the oxide powder mixture forms yttrium aluminum garnet ceramic.

This process produces a sorbent for use in desulfurization of coal gas. A zinc titanate compound and a metal oxide are mixed by milling the compounds in an aqueous medium, the resulting mixture is dried and then calcined, crushed, sleved and formed into pellets for use in a moving-bed reactor. Metal oxides suitable for use as an additive in this process include: magnesium oxide, magnesium oxide plus molybdenum oxide, calcium oxide, yttrium oxide, hafnium oxide, zirconium oxide, cupric oxide, and tin oxide. The resulting sorbent has a percentage of the original zinc or titanium ions substituted for the oxide metal of the chosen additive.

A composition for making a transparent sintered yttrium aluminum garnet ceramic material wherein the composition includes an amount of yttrium oxide powder and aluminum oxide powder. The yttrium oxide powder has a particle surface area of about 18 m2 per gram and the aluminum oxide powder has a surface area of about 10 m2 per gram. The mixture is doped with a Si containing compound and Mg-containing compound, and formed into a desired shape. The mixture in the formed shape is converted to yttrium aluminum garnet during a sintering schedule to form a transparent ceramic material having an in-line transmission of at least 50%.
