    Abstract: An apparatus for applying an impervious protective coating over the seams of cylindrical metal can bodies either before or after the seams are welded, soldered, or cemented and prior to spray coating the complete interior of the bodies. The apparatus is operable to intermittently apply an airless spray to the interior seams of the cans as they continuously move past an airless spray gun secured to the end of a stubhorn of a can forming line. The apparatus includes a new and improved airless spray nozzle which is operable to atomize the spray nearer the nozzle than has heretofore been possible. It also includes a pair of air jets located on opposite sides of the spray and operable to confine the atomized spray or fog to the seam of the can so that little or no excess material is sprayed onto that portion of the can located adjacent the seam.

    Abstract: A modular apparatus for heating circulating liquids such as paint. The apparatus has a heater module that may be heated internally to a high temperature by electrical energy for example, and one or more interchangeable circuit modules having a relatively high thermal conductivity and positioned face to face against the heater module in heat transfer relationship therewith. Each circuit module has a group of generally parallel internal passages formed for example during extrusion and interconnected in pairs at their ends so as to define a sinuous circuit for liquid between inlet and outlet ports. One circuit module may be secured on each opposite face of the heater module with the two respective groups of passages interconnected through the interposed heater module to form a continuous series connection between the two circuit modules. Two or more such units may be ganged with a series circuit connection to enlarge the circuit and increase the volumetric capacity.

    Abstract: Improved airless spray nozzles and methods and means for making them. A spray nozzle tip having a central longitudinal passage terminating in an outlet orifice is provided with a single lateral inlet to the passage. The opposite open end of the passage is closed to form a turbulence chamber by means which may be removable or detachable and may be yielding or resilient. The lateral inlet is related in size to the outlet orifice and is in the form of a slot having transverse faces which lie in planes that intersect in a line which lies in a plane normal to the longitudinal axis of the passage. The nozzle tip may be mounted in a carrier. The nozzle tip is readily cleanable by a cleaning probe inserted through the lateral inlet. The nozzle tip is made from a preformed blank having an internal passage by a grinding wheel of the proper shape and size. The effective areas of the inlet and outlet orifices are determined during their cutting by passing air through the passages and measuring the rate of flow from the lateral inlet and from the outlet orifice.

    Abstract: Improvements in spray nozzles suitable for hydraulic airless spraying in flat fan patterns, including spraying viscous liquids such as paint, are disclosed herein. Such an improved spray nozzle comprises a known V-cut discharge orifice in a known hemispherical or hemispheroidal impingement dome at the downstream end of a central longitudinal approach passage. It also comprises novel means at or near the upstream end of the passage in novel coaction with the downstream parts of the nozzle for giving a turbulence and/or beneficient quality to the fluid stream as it enters said dome and/or enters and flows through and/or beyond said discharge orifice. It is also disclosed that this nozzle gives an improved spray pattern with better atomization and distribution in relation to the viscosity of the fluid being sprayed and the fluid pressure drop across the nozzle. The improvements disclosed herein may also be incorporated advantageously in nozzles such as in the Brooks U.S. Pat. No. 3,366,337, for mixing and spraying two or more different constitutents of a multicomponent material system. In this improved spray nozzle, the upstream end of said passage is closed against the entry of fluid moving in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the passage, and the nozzle is free of prior art metering jets, preorifices and restrictors which tended so to move the fluid. Fluid is required to enter the upstream end of the passage transversely of said axis, and change direction abruptly with vigorous agitation in a zone or chamber of turbulence and agitation at an appreciable distance from the downstream outlet orifice. The initial agitation produces, or results in the beneficiently turbulent stream and effect mentioned above. It is also disclosed that one form of this improved nozzle is conveniently made in two parts and comprises a removable end closure part, sometimes herein called a turbulence plate, coacting with the upstream end of the said passage, which passage, with said dome and orifice, is incorporated in the other, i.e. body or ''''tip,'''' part of the nozzle. The nozzle can be caused to revert to substantially prior conventional form and function upon removal of the turbulence plate from its coacting relation to and with the said tip or body portion of the nozzle.
