摘要: Methods and apparatus are provided for making an optically readable media unreadable and tamper-resistant. A method has steps of (a) providing the media with a readout surface layer that is non-flat (i.e., textured in some way, such as by embossing, scratching, depositing a non-planar layer or regions, such as droplets) and that inhibits optical readout of the media; (b) applying a coating layer to the non-flat surface layer to smooth the non-flat surface and to enable optical readout of the media; and, after an initiation of a readout period, (c) removing the coating layer so as to expose the non-flat readout surface layer, thereby inhibiting optical readout of the media. Preferably, the coating layer is substantially index matched to the readout surface layer. The step of removing includes at least one of evaporating or subliming a component material of the coating layer A method is also disclosed for discouraging tampering with a readout-limiting mechanism by (a) providing the media with at least one layer that embodies the readout-limiting mechanism; (b) providing a textured surface that forms part of a layer that underlies the at least one layer, where the textured surface inhibits optical readout of the media; and (c) applying a coating layer over the textured surface to smooth the textured surface and to enable optical readout of the media, wherein removal of the coating layer exposes the textured surface thereby inhibiting optical readout of the media.

摘要: Methods and apparatus are provided for making an optically readable media unreadable. The method includes steps of (a) providing the media with an optically activated mechanism that degrades the reflectivity of a surface wherein information is encoded; (b) exposing the media to optical radiation for reading out the information; and, during the step of exposing, (c) initiating the operation of the optically activated mechanism. In this embodiment the step of initiating includes steps of (d) generating singlet oxygen in a layer disposed on the media; and (e) reacting the singlet oxygen with a metal-containing layer for oxidizing the surface of the metal-containing layer, thereby degrading the reflectivity of the surface. In a further aspect the optically activated mechanism causes a defocusing of a readout beam, thereby degrading reflection of the readout beam from a surface wherein information is encoded. In another embodiment the method deforms a surface of the layer resulting in readout beam aberration or in an inability to correctly stay on track. In another embodiment a portion of the surface is removed to the atmosphere, such as by evaporation of sublimation. In this embodiment a layer of the media is comprised of a volatile component and at least one other component. Removing at least some of volatile component by evaporation or sublimation causes an increase in at least one of photoabsorption or scattering or surface roughness with the remaining component, thereby rendering at least a portion of encoded information of the media unreadable, or affecting the tracking operation.

摘要: An aqueous system for the production of metal chalcogenide nanocrystalline salts such as zinc selenide, from a hydrolyzable chalcogen carbonyl compound, such as selenourea, by simple hydrolysis thereof under alkaline conditions in the presence of water soluble metal hydroxide, such as zinc hydroxide in the form of the zincate ion, i.e., Zn(OH).sub.4.sup.-2. Selenourea contains selenium in the correct oxidation state, is inexpensive, commercially-available and readily hydrolyzable under aqueous basic conditions in the presence of the zincate ion to form zinc selenide. The zinc selenide is insoluble in the alkaline aqueous vehicle and precipitates over time in the form of nanocrystallites or quantum dots of the zinc selenide.
