A process for the halogen-assisted conversion of lower alkanes to higher molecular weight hydrocarbons is provided. A first reaction mixture including lower alkanes, a hydrogen halide and an oxygen-containing gas are contacted with a catalytic composition of crystalline copper aluminum borate at appropriate reaction conditions to form an intermediate composition including halogenated alkanes. The halogenated alkanes are subsequently contacted with a catalytic composition of a pentasil molecular sieve material under appropriate reaction conditions to form a product mixture including hydrocarbons having molecular weights greater than the lower alkanes.

Also described is the use of such materials in catalytic compositions for the conversion of organic compounds. In particular, the new materials having the general formula:(x)(M.sub.m :M'.sub.n)O.(y)Al.sub.2 O.sub.3.(z)B.sub.2 O.sub.3where M and M' are metallo elements selected from the group consisting of nickel and cobalt, m and n are numbers form 0 to 1, inclusive, such that m+n=1, and x, y and z are numbers representing molar amounts of the oxides are described as well as the use of such materials in various catalyzed processes including hydrogenation of hydrocarbons and oxygen containing hydrocarbons, dehydrogenation to functionalize alkylaromatic compounds, isomerization of alkylaromatic compounds, oligomerization of olefins, and oxidation of hydrocarbons and oxygen containing hydrocarbons.

The invention relates to a light metal oxide-based amorphous electrical conductor which comprises an amorphous ternary composition consisting of alumina, boria, and an oxide of a light metal selected from Group IA and IIA of the Periodic Table of Elements. Amorphous conductors of the present invention can be produced by forming an aqueous composition comprising a source of light metal ions, a source of alumina and a source of boria to form a homogeneous gel, drying the gel to form a superifically dry solid, and calcining the dry solid at a sufficiently high temperature to form an amorphous ternary composition as described above. The conductor is used as an element of a moisture and/or a high temperature sensor.

There is provided a process for the preparation of an overbased sulfurized alkaline earth metal alkylphenate product which provides improved bright stock solubility and reduced foam stability, the overbased alkylphenate products produced thereby, and lubricating oil compositions containing such overbased alkylphenate products. According to the process, a mixture of an alkylphenol having an alkyl group containing from about 8 to about 40 carbon atoms, elemental sulfur, a dihydric alcohol containing from 2 to 6 carbon atoms, an alkaline earth metal compound, a lubricating oil, and a high boiling point linear monohydric alcohol having from about 18 to about 60 carbon atoms is heated to a first temperature within the range of about 121.degree. C. (250.degree. F.) to about 204.degree. C. (400.degree. F.); the resulting intermediate product mixture is contacted with carbon dioxide at a second temperature below 193.degree. C. (380.degree. F.) to provide a carbonated product mixture; the carbonated product mixture is treated to remove unreacted alkylphenol, unreacted dihydric alcohol, and substantially all of the remaining water of reaction to provide a final product mixture; and the final product mixture comprising said overbased alkylphenate and substantially all of the high boiling point linear monohydric alcohol is recovered.
