A method of operating a device for treating sleep disordered breathing (SDB), wherein the device provides continuous positive airway pressure during sleep, includes determining whether treatment pressure at the patient interface is below a desired value, in response to the determining, increasing pressure generated by the flow generator, in response to the increasing, making a determination that the increase in flow generator pressure has resulted in less than a desired increase in treatment pressure at the patient interface, and in response to the determination, reducing or inhibiting further increase of the flow generator pressure.

A Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) device includes a flow generator that generates a supply of pressurized air. The flow generator includes a programmable controller. The programmable controller is adapted to allow continuous access to at least one active operating mode and selective access to at least one dormant operating mode. The programmable controller includes a mode control system adapted to receive a data signal to control the selective access to the at least one dormant operating mode.

A blower assembly is configured to deliver a flow of breathable gas at a continuously positive pressure with respect to ambient air pressure to a patient interface in communication with an entrance to a patient's airways including at least an entrance of the patient's nares, while the patient is sleeping, to ameliorate sleep disordered breathing. The blower assembly includes a motor having a shaft that extends from opposite sides of the motor. The blower assembly also includes an impeller and a circuit board. The impeller is attached to the shaft on a first side of the motor and is structured to rotate in close proximity to a volute wall. The circuit board is configured to control power supplied to the motor and is configured to disable the motor when the impeller is closer than a predetermined distance from the volute wall.

A CPAP or other ventilation system includes a mask, a flow generator, a positive or high pressure line to provide positive or high pressure air from the flow generator to the mask and a vacuum or return line provided to actively extract exhaled gas from the breathing chamber and/or the air delivery conduit of the mask. The vacuum or return line includes a vent outlet preferably positioned remote from the mask.
