Abstract: The invention is directed to an electrical connector comprising a housing having a plurality of contacts mounted therein to provide electrical connection from a daughter board to a circuit board. The contacts provide a linear array of first connection points to the circuit board. The circuit board converts the linear array of first connection points to an area array of second connection points and the area array of second connection points are connected to a mother board by way of a ball grid array. The housing provides an electrical connection between the daughter board and the mother board.

Abstract: The invention comprises an electrical connector assembly for connecting a daughter card to a mother board including a first housing (20) having contacts (34, 38) mounted therein. The contacts (34, 38) are electrically connected to the daughter card. A second housing (24) is mounted along the edge of the daughter card. The second housing (24) has a mating face and a connecting face. The second housing has contacts (90, 92) mounted therein. The contacts (90, 92) of the second housing are electrically connected to the contacts (34, 38) in the first housing by an impedance controlled flexible film (110). The mating face has a plurality of contact protrusions (88) forming a field. The contact protrusion (88) have one ground contact (92) disposed along one side and two signal contacts (90) disposed along another side to form a differential pair for engaging contacts (126, 128) on the motherboard.

Abstract: A locking mechanism (10) for use with an electrical connector assembly (80). The locking mechanism (10) includes a latch support (60) having a D-slot washer (52) therein which is installed on a rotatable shaft (20). The rotatable shaft (20) is operable to engage a camming plate on a further electrical connector and thereby draw the assembly (80) into electrical engagement therewith. A stop flange (52b) of D-slot washer (52) is operable to limit the amount of rotational movement of the shaft (20) thereby preventing over-travel of the shaft. Additionally, the locking mechanism includes a ball plunger (56) for interfacing with the stop flange (52b) thereby providing a detent for the D-slot washer (52) and shaft (20). Over torque and over-travel of the shaft (20) are prevented, and the ball plunger (56) prevents inadvertent rotation of the shaft (20).
