An electric motor-driven brake pressure modulator has an auxiliary field winding connected in series-parallel relationship with a permanent magnet field DC motor to produce different speed/torque performance characteristics depending on the direction of motor rotation. In forward motor rotation when the brake pressure is to be increased, the mmf of the auxiliary field winding aids the mmf of the field magnets to produce a higher flux density in the working air gap of the motor. This maximizes the torque characteristic of the motor for the development of adequate brake pressure. In the reverse direction of motor rotation when the brake pressure is to be decreased, the mmf of the auxiliary field winding opposes the mmf of the field magnets to lower the flux density in the working air gap of the motor. This maximizes the speed characteristic of the motor to quickly reduce the brake pressure.

A motor driven air moving apparatus adapted to high speed, constant duty operation has a DC permanent magnet motor with a stator and rotor, one having a wound core with an even number of identically sized, evenly spaced teeth and the other having an even number of identically sized, permanent magnet poles. One of the rotor and stator has a skew at an angle from the axial, the maximum achievable skew being less than one tooth pitch due to short axial core width. A groove is provided along the midline of each of the teeth of the core which is parallel to and shallower than the tooth separating slots and contains no winding. The groove is effective to divide the tooth magnetically in half and thus decrease the effective tooth pitch, whereby, simultaneously, the magnetically induced pulsating angular velocity of the rotor and resultant audible noise are reduced and the system efficiency of the motor and air moving apparatus combination at high speeds in constant duty operation is increased.

Improved mechanical efficiency is attained by means of a motor-driven eccentric cam imparting linear motion through one or more of the compressor pistons to the compression stroke and wherein the work to reciprocate each piston is assisted by dual out-of-phase compression springs. The cam is configured for producing a predetermined dwell-period when each piston reaches its bottom-dead-center position wherein a maximum gas charge will be inducted into the cylinder bore by the ram velocity effect of the inward moving gas stream. In a like manner the cam design provides piston dwell time at its top-dead-center position wherein an increased gas charge will be expelled per cycle resulting in increased volumetric efficiency.

Differential performance characteristics are achieved in a motor-driven anti-lock braking system with a DC motor having a first brush which is employed for both forward and reverse motor rotation, a second brush which is employed in connection with the first brush when forward motor rotation is desired, and a third brush which is employed in connection with the first brush when reverse motor rotation is desired. The second and third brushes are displaced along the circumference of the motor commutator such that the first and second brushes encompass more turns of the rotor winding than the first and third brushes. As a result, more of the winding turns are active in the forward direction, and the motor torque is maximized for developing the required brake pressure. On the other hand, fewer of the winding turns are active in the reverse direction, and the motor speed is maximized to relatively quickly retract the armature within the valve bore to relieve the brake pressure.
