In addition, an improved connection is provided between the impeller shaft and the impeller that dispenses for the need for splines and thus permits a smaller impeller hub and a greater efficiency jet drive unit.

    摘要: A small, personal watercraft powered by a four cycle internal combustion engine. The engine is provided with a dry sump lubrication system for permitting the engine to be mounted low in the hull and this dry sump lubrication system includes a lubricant tank mounted within the hull separately from, but spaced closely to, the engine. Induction and exhaust systems are provided for the engine which include position responsive valves that close when the watercraft is inverted to preclude water from entering the combustion chamber through either the intake or the exhaust system. The induction system also includes an air inlet device that has its own position responsive check valve and which provides a centrifugal separator for separating water from the air inducted into the engine.

    摘要: Several embodiment of small boats having improved exhaust systems for precluding the entry of water into the engine combustion chambers from the body of water in which the watercraft is operating. In each embodiment, the exhaust system includes a horizontally extending expansion chamber with an exhaust gas outlet whichis defined by a vertically extending tube in the expansion chamber so as to prevent the likelihood of water reentering the engines through the exhaust system. Several arrangements are disclosed for draining the water from the expansion chamber and the exhaust gases are discharged from the engine into the tunnel around the jet drive unit.

    摘要: An improved fuel delivery and injection system for a small watercraft engine reduces the heat effects within an enclosed engine compartment upon various components of the engine and upon the fuel within the fuel system. The fuel system integrates a fuel pump within a fuel tank at a location which minimizes the effects of watercraft leaning. The inlet of the fuel pump desirably corresponds, in the lateral direction, with a position of an inlet to the jet pump unit. In this position, the pump is less likely to draw air as the watercraft maneuvers. The fuel lines also are arranged within the engine to minimize the effect of engine heat produced by the exhaust system on the fuel delivery lines. The arrangement of the fuel pump and fuel delivery lines consequently improves the consistency of the fuel/air ratio within the fuel charge produced by the engine as less air and vapor delivered to the fuel injectors.

In each embodiment, at least one expansion chamber is provided for silencing and cooling the exhaust gases and exhaust gases are delivered from the engine exhaust port to the expansion chamber through a horizontally extending exhaust conduit that has its outlet opening communicating with the expansion chamber at a position spaced substantial distances from the vertically extending side and end walls of the expansion chamber for precluding the likelihood of entry of water into the engine cylinders through the exhaust system. In one embodiment, two such expansion chambers are employed.

An exhaust path extends from the cylinder bore for exhausting combustion products from the cylinder bore. An exhaust control valve cooperates with the exhaust port and is movable between at least a first position for advancing the closing of the exhaust port so as to increase the compression ratio in the engine and a second position for delaying the closing of the exhaust port so as to decrease the compression ratio in the engine. Means for controlling the exhaust control valve between the first and second position are provided and are controlled in response to a watercraft condition.

    摘要: An improved fuel delivery and injection system for a small watercraft engine reduces the heat effects within an enclosed engine compartment upon a fuel pump of and the fuel within a fuel injection system. The fuel delivery system includes a vapor separator and a high-pressure fuel pump. The fuel pump is at least partially located within the vapor separator. The fuel within the vapor separator cools the fuel pump. The vapor separator also is positioned between a pair of air ducts such that an air stream between the ducts cools the fuel within the vapor separator. This arrangement consequently improves the consistency of the air/fuel ratio in the fuel charges delivered to the engine cylinders, provides a compact structure between the fuel pump, and the vapor separator and improves the durability of the fuel pump.
