A waterborne composition for forming protective coatings to provide, by a simple method comprising coating and drying onto a metal surface, a coating that is uniform with little unevenness and that has an excellent galling resistance and workability that are at least as good as the corresponding properties afforded by conversion treatment methodologies, contains water-soluble inorganic salt and smectite-type clay mineral. The lubrication performance of the coating can also be improved when said composition additionally contains a lubricating component.

The coated particles are novel particles which can be used as an ingredient of coating-type lubricating coating; are excellent in seizure resistance; can inhibit wear of tools at the time of plastic working since the friction coefficient of the surface of the particles is low; and are slow to cause pollution of working oils. Lubricating coating obtained by applying the lubricating coating forming agent onto the surface of a metallic material gives excellent cold plastic working properties, namely lubricity and seizure resistance to the metallic material.

A protective coating is formed on a metallic material surface by applying a treating agent comprising water, an alkali silicate, and, optionally, a lubricating component to the surface and drying the treating agent. The coating film thereby formed has excellent anti-galling and rust preventive properties. If a lubricating component is present, the coating film also has excellent self-lubricating properties.

To inhibit the blackening of zinciferous metal-plated steel sheet while also generating a good corrosion resistance, fingerprint resistance, and chromium fixation ratio for the steel sheet, it is coated with an aqueous liquid composition that has a pH not exceeding 2.5 and contains hexavalent chromium ion, trivalent chromium ion, nickel ion, inorganic acid (preferably phosphoric acid), and film-forming resin, with a weight ratio between the nickel content and the total chromium content of 0.05 to 1, and the liquid coating is dried onto the treated metalsurface to form a blackening resistant coating that contains from 0.1 to 10 g/m.sup.2 resin and from 2 to 150 mg/m.sup.2 of total chromium.
