An epoxy resin having hydroxyl groups is modified with .epsilon.-caprolactone by effecting the ring opening polymerization of .epsilon.-caprolactone onto the hydroxyl groups contained in the epoxy resin. The modified epoxy resin is further combined with a polycarboxylic anhydride and a promotor for curing, or polyamine to give a curable composition. The modified epoxy resin is further modified by reacting the epoxy groups therein with a primary or secondary amine. Both the modified resin and the compositions are useful as coating.

A radiation-curable resin composition is disclosed. It comprises 0.1 to 10 parts by weight of a photosensitizer added to 100 parts by weight of a mixture of 40 to 95 wt % of a resin having a molecular weight of at least 300 and at least one ethylenically unsaturated group in the molecule and 60 to 5 wt % of .epsilon.-caprolactone modified 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate or methacrylate of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R=H or CH.sub.3 andn is 1 to 10.The composition has a high boiling point, low viscosity and shows reduced skin irritation and rash capability without sacrificing its inherent radiation-curing capability.

A process for preparing a graft polymer by subjecting a cyclic ester to ring-opening polymerization in the presence of a cellulose derivative in the presence of a ring-opening polymerization catalyst for the cyclic ester. The resulting graft polymer has high transparency, good film-formability and high solubility and can be suitably used as a novel polymer material.

A lactone-modified epoxy (meth)acrylate resin is disclosed as is a hardenable resin composition which includes the lactone-modified epoxy resin. The lactone-modified epoxy (meth)acrylate resin is obtained by addition polymerizing 3 to 95 parts by weight of a lactone to 97 to 5 parts by weight of an epoxy (meth)acrylate resin at the whole or a part of the secondary hydroxy groups thereof. The hardenable resin composition comprises (A) 5 to 95 parts by weight of the above referred to lactone-modified epoxy (meth)acrylate resin, (B) 95 to 5 parts by weight of a vinyl compound having an ethylenically unsaturated bond, and (C) 0 to 10 parts by weight of a photosensitizer.

A polyurethane resin obtained from a diisocyanate compound and a polyester polyol. The polyester polyol may (1) comprise not less than 50% by weight of a polyester glycol having a molecular weight of 500-5,000, the polyester glycol being obtained by reacting an acid and 3,3,5-trimethyl-1,6-hexanediol or 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,6-hexanediol and have a molecular weight of 500-5,000, (2) have a number average molecular weight of 500-5,000 and an alcohol hydroxyl group at terminals thereof and comprise not less than 50% by weight of ester units, the ester units being derived from a dicarboxylic acid and 3,3,5-trimethyl-1,6-hexanediol and/or 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,6-hexanediol, or (3) have a number-average molecular weight of 500-5,000 and comprise not less than 50% by weight of ester units of an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid and trimethyl-1,6-hexanediols. The above polyurethane resins may be combined with chlorinated polyolefin and then used in binder compositions or, alternately used in coating compositions for decoration paper made of a polyolefin resin. The above polyurethane resins may also be laminated on at least one surface of a woven cloth made of synthetic resin to form a laminated clothing that may further be used in an air bag for a vehicle.

A lactone-modified hydroxyethyl (meth)acrylate solution comprising 30 to 95 parts by weight of a lactone-modified hydroxyethyl (meth)acrylate represented by the formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R is CH.sub.3 or H, and n is an integer of from 3 to 20, and 5 to 70 parts by weight of a solvent selected from the group consisting of toluene, xylene, an acetic acid ester and a mixture thereof is disclosed. The solution of the invention is homogeneous at room temperature.
