摘要: A light-emitting element has a property that a resistance value (internal resistance) changes in accordance with an environmental temperature. It is an object to downsize a monitoring element which corrects an influence of variations in current value of the light-emitting element, which are caused by an environmental temperature change and a change with time. A pixel includes a plurality of sub-pixels, areas of light-emitting elements provided in the individual sub-pixels are made to be different from each other, and an area of a monitoring element is made to be the same as an area of the light-emitting element in any of the sub-pixels, thereby correcting light-emission of the pixel by the monitoring element.

摘要: Semiconductor elements deteriorate or are destroyed due to electrostatic discharge damage. The present invention provides a semiconductor device in which a protecting means is formed in each pixel. The protecting means is provided with one or a plurality of elements selected from the group consisting of resistor elements, capacitor elements, and rectifying elements. Sudden changes in the electric potential of a source electrode or a drain electrode of a transistor due to electric charge that builds up in a pixel electrode is relieved by disposing the protecting means between the pixel electrode of the light-emitting element and the source electrode or the drain electrode of the transistor. Deterioration or destruction of the semiconductor element due to electrostatic discharge damage is thus prevented.

摘要: Semiconductor elements deteriorate or are destroyed due to electrostatic discharge damage. The present invention provides a semiconductor device in which a protecting means is formed in each pixel. In the invention, a display device for suppressing effects due to variations of a current value of a light-emitting element, which is caused by variations of environmental temperature and variations with time.A first substrate having a pixel portion in which pixels constituted by a plurality of transistors are arranged in matrix has a source driver for supplying a video signal, a gate driver for selecting a pixel, a power source circuit, and a compensation circuit for compensating variations in characteristics of a light-emitting element. The first substrate is connected to a second substrate through a connecting wire, and the second substrate has a controller and a video memory. The controller is a piece for making a signal which is necessary for a display device to display from image data to be inputted externally such as a CPU by using a video memory as required.

摘要: It is an object of the present invention to provide a display device in which images can be seen under a dark place to intense external light. In the display device, display is performed by changing the gray scale number depending on external light intensity, and display modes can be switched depending on contents displayed on the screen. An analog mode and a digital mode are switched depending on external light intensity. In an analog digital switching circuit, when a video signal is an analog value, a signal is outputted to a pixel array without any change and, when the video signal is a digital value, the signal is outputted to a circuit that performs a digital operation such as a latch circuit. Consequently, display gray scales of a pixel are changed appropriately. Accordingly, a clear image can be displayed. For example, it is possible to ensure visibility in a wide range of a dark place or under indoor florescent light to outdoor sun light.

For example, a display device which secures visibility can be obtained in a wide range from under fluorescent light in a dark place or indoor to under outdoor sunlight.

The display device performs display by controlling the number of gray scales in accordance with the intensity of outside light, which means a display mode can be switched in accordance with the data to be displayed on the display screen. A video signal generation circuit is controlled in each display mode in such a manner that it directly outputs an input video signal with an analog value, outputs a signal with a binary digital value, or outputs a signal with a multivalued digital value. As a result, gray scales displayed in pixels are timely changed. Accordingly, clear images can be displayed while maintaining high visibility in various environments, in the wide range from, for example, dark places or indoors (e.g., under a fluorescent lighting) to outdoors (e.g., under the sunlight).

摘要: The object of the invention is to provide a display device of which the display is visible in a dark place or under strong external light. The present invention is a display device which performs display, changing the grayscale number corresponding to the external light strength, and a display device which can switch the display mode corresponding to contents displayed on the screen. The display contents include a text display mode displaying mainly characters and symbols, a picture display mode displaying images with a small number of colors such as a comic, a video mode displaying natural images with a large number of colors such as a photograph and a moving image, and the like. By switching the grayscale number arbitrarily according to these display modes, visibility can be ensured in a wide range from a dark place or under an indoor fluorescent light to under outdoor sunlight. For example, the grayscale number is switched so that display of from 2 to 8 grayscales is performed in the text display mode, display of from 4 to 16 grayscales is performed in the picture display mode, and display of from 64 to 1024 grayscales is performed in the video mode.
