The driving system and method includes a driver for driving the first and second independent and common electrodes through a full writing period, a front surface erasing period, a writing period, and a discharge sustaining period, including supplying a first full writing pulse to the first common electrode at the back plate side and a second full writing pulse having a polarity which is opposite to the polarity of the first full writing pulse to the first independent electrodes at the back plate side for causing discharge between the first common and independent electrodes in the full writing period.

    摘要: To achieve an expansion of color reproducibility and an improvement in contrast ratio, color filters 8R, 8G and 8B formed in stripes are successively arranged on one surface of a front glass substrate 1, interposing a black matrixes 7 between them. Sustaining electrodes 6 are provided thereon and a dielectric layer 9 and a protecting layer 10 are provided. On a rear glass substrate 2, barrier ribs 3 are provided in the manner they face the respective black matrixes 7, and thus the spaces between the barrier ribs 3 facing the respective color filters 8R, 8G and 8B form cells. The cells are respectively provided with the sustaining electrodes 6 falling at right angles with the address electrodes 4, coated with fluorescent substances 5R, 5G and 5B corresponding to the respective colors, and also sealed to hold discharge gas therein. A wave band selecting filter 11 for screening the light emitted from the discharge gas in the respective cells is provided on the other surface of the front glass substrate 1.

Particularly, it is disclosed that the technique for conducting the reset operation by impressing, to the electrode of cells, a plurality of reset pulses per one subfield in the subfield period for the reset operation and then conducting the address operation for selecting cells for display discharge. Further, it is disclosed that the display technique for causing the cells of display panel to conduct display discharge for image display through the reset operation and address operation. Namely, it is the technique for impressing the auxiliary pulse to the electrode of cells after impression of reset pulse for reset operation to form charges in inverse voltage to the scan pulse during the address operation and then conducting the address operation for selecting the cells for display discharge.

    摘要: A display apparatus and display method are provided for a display panel having pixels arranged in a matrix form for displaying an image on a effective display area. Horizontal electrodes and vertical electrodes in the display panel are scanned for selectively illuminating said pixels by using a time sharing drive method in which one field period is divided into plural sub-fields weighted according to a sustaining period. As a result, an effective display area is divided into plural areas, no scanning for selecting a light emitting pixel is executed in a non-display area, and the number of sub-fields is increased in an area in which display in multiple gradations is required in a display area to obtain sufficient gradation. Instead of increasing the number of the sub-fields, the total sustaining period per one field is increased to obtain sufficient brightness. According to a feature of the invention, another area is provided in which the number of sub-fields is limited to the required minimum in which display in multiple gradations is not required. According to other feature of the invention, another area having few sub-fields is prepared instead of providing the non-display area.
