The lattice-like barrier ribs include lateral ribs extending along a first direction while being nearly in parallel to each other, and vertical ribs extending along a second direction different from the first direction while being nearly in parallel to each other. Each of the lateral ribs is composed of two or more rows of rib elements. Notches for communicating spaces surrounded by the vertical ribs and the lateral ribs to each other in the first direction and/or the second direction are formed at least in portions of the vertical ribs and/or the lateral ribs.

A plasma display panel has plurality discharge cells disposed between a pair of opposing first and second substrates. Each of the discharge cells includes at least: at least one pair of electrodes for generating a discharge for display; a discharge gas; and a phosphor film for emitting visible light by being excited by ultraviolet light produced by the discharge of the discharge gas. Laminated members are dispersed in a plane within each of the discharge cells inside the first substrate from which visible light for display is emitted. Each of the laminated members includes a light absorption layer disposed on a side of the first substrate on which ambient light is incident and a light reflection layer disposed on a phosphor-film side of each of the laminated members.

The front substrate is constituted from a transparent first insulating substrate, and a plurality of stripe-shaped first electrodes including at least one discharge electrode and extending parallel to each other. The rear substrate is constituted from a second insulating substrate, a plurality of second electrodes extending parallel to each other, and a plurality of ribs forming a plurality of discharge spaces therebetween. The discharge electrode includes a transparent electrode, a black-colored first conductive layer, and a second conductive layer. The second conductive layer has a lower resistivity than the first conductive layer and is made with widths smaller than those of the first conductive layer and extends to the edge of the first insulating substrate.

There is also included a colorant having color properties of red, blue, and green colors, and a protection layer formed on the dielectric layer. The dielectric layer may include one or more colorants so that important properties of PDP such as selective brightness of desired color, color temperature, and color purity improvement can be controlled.

The dielectric layer is formed of a low-melting-point glass, and the electrodes are formed of a metal containing a crystallized glass.
