    摘要: A liquid crystal display has spacers for maintaining a liquid crystal layer and a cell gap between a substrate and an opposite substrate and also has regions either within a single pixel or over two or more pixels. The spacers are of columnar shape elongated from the substrate to the opposite substrate or the other way round, and the columnar spacers are provided in regions in which the liquid crystal layer is thinnest among those regions in which the liquid crystal layer varies in thickness. The structure makes the liquid crystal display having two or more different cell gaps to stably maintain those cell gaps and produces good quality displays.

    摘要: A liquid crystal display device includes a ferroelectric liquid crystal layer. The ferroelectric liquid crystal molecules have pretilt directions defined by first direction vectors obtained by orthogonally projecting first imaginary vectors to each surface of a pair of substrates. The first imaginary vectors are parallel to the liquid crystal molecules in the ferroelectric liquid crystal layer in the vicinity of the substrates and directed away from each surface of the pair of substrates toward a center portion of the ferroelectric liquid crystal layer in its thickness direction. The ferroelectric liquid crystal layer has a chevron layered structure. A bending direction of the smectic layers is the same direction as the first direction vector obtained by orthogonally projecting a second imaginary vector to the substrates. The second imaginary vector is parallel to the smectic layers and is included in the same plane with the first imaginary vector and is directed away from the substrates toward the center of the ferroelectric liquid crystal layer. Walls made of insulating non-liquid crystal material are formed between the pair of substrates in a direction perpendicular to the surfaces of the pair of substrates and a light-shielding film is formed on either one of the substrates so that light does not pass through portions of the ferroelectric liquid crystal in a vicinity of a downstream side of the walls along the pretilt direction.

    摘要: A liquid crystal display device includes a pair of substrates provided with electrodes, at least one of the substrates being transparent, a liquid crystal region and a polymeric wall surrounding the liquid crystal region, the liquid crystal region and the polymeric wall being interposed between the pair of substrates. Such a liquid crystal display device can be obtained by a method including at least one step of heating a liquid crystal cell including a mixture containing a liquid crystal material and a photocurable resin interposed between the pair of substrates to a temperature higher than the transition temperature of the liquid crystal material in order to control a mobility of the liquid crystal material and the photocurable resin; and at least one step of cooling the heated liquid crystal cell to a temperature lower than the transition temperature in order to cause phase separation of the liquid crystal material from the photocurable resin and form a liquid crystal region and a polymeric wall at desired locations.

A driver mechanism shifts the longitudinal axes of molecules of the liquid crystal, and is adapted to apply a voltage to the liquid crystal for selectively and bistably executing switching between a first state in which the longitudinal axes of liquid crystal molecules adjacent the upper substrate have a tilt angle with respect to the upper substrate and the longitudinal axes of liquid crystal molecules adjacent the lower substrate are parallel to the lower substrate, while the longitudinal axes of liquid crystal molecules adjacent the upper and lower substrates projected on the planes of the upper and lower substrates are oriented in a generally same direction, and a second state wherein the longitudinal axes of the liquid crystal molecules adjacent the lower substrate have a tilt angle with respect to the cross-sectional direction of the lower substrate and the longitudinal axes of the liquid crystal molecules adjacent the upper substrate are parallel to the cross-sectional direction of the upper substrate, while the longitudinal axes of the liquid crystal molecules adjacent the lower and upper substrates projected on the lower and upper substrates are oriented in a generally same direction.

    摘要: A backlight illumination control circuit changes the ratio of an illumination period BL to a non-illumination period in a frame period V of a backlight according to a gradation level in the one frame period V of an image displayed on a liquid crystal panel in such a manner that the higher the gradation level, the backlight illumination control circuit increases the ratio of the illumination period BL to the non-illumination period in the frame period V of the backlight, and the lower the gradation level, the backlight illumination control circuit decreases the ratio of the illumination period BL to the non-illumination period in the frame period V of the backlight and thereby controls illumination intensity toward the liquid crystal panel. A time center of illumination intensity in each one frame period V of the backlight is controlled in order that the time center exists in a constant temporal position T from the beginning of each frame period V. This realizes a liquid crystal display device being free from perceived flickers, giving a high contrast feeling, and being excellent in the performance of moving image display.
