摘要: An automatic system and method for the separation of blood into component parts includes a conically shaped collection and separation bag, component bags connected to the collection and separation bag, a sensor, valves to seal the connections between the component bags and the collection and separation bag, a centrifuge and a controller for controlling the process. Blood is placed in the collection and separation bag and is separated by centrifuging. The components are removed from the collection and separation bag either directly or indirectly by the centrifugal force into the component bags. Flow of the components is directed by automatic opening and closing of the valves in response to the position of the interface between the separated components determined by the sensor or elapsed time.

摘要: A gas transfer apparatus readily adapted for oxygenating blood includes a housing with a hollow internal chamber having a fiber mat consisting of two sets of intermingled hollow fibers with one set of fibers having micropores formed in the walls thereof and the other set having solid liquid impermeable walls. The housing for the apparatus is designed such that the blood being processed passes substantially uniformly across the entire cross section of the fiber mat whereby a treating gas such as oxygen being directed through the microporous fibers can be diffused into the oxygen deficient blood while excess CO.sub.2 in the blood can cross diffuse into the interior of the fiber and be removed from the apparatus. Simultaneously with the cross diffusion of gas between the microporous fibers and the blood, a thermal conducting fluid such as water is passed through the solid walled fibers to maintain or regulate the temperature of the blood in the apparatus. The microporous and solid walled fibers may be woven in layers which are laminated to form a predetermined mat thickness separated by layers with only parallel fibers of a single set in each layer.

摘要: A blood processing system (2), includes a housing (4), to which a user control panel is mounted, having an access opening (47) therein. A cassette assembly (22), mounted to the housing for movement between a use position covering the access opening and a cassette-replacement position, includes a cassette holder and cassette (26) removably mounted to the holder. The cassette includes in part by tubing aligned with a through-hole (45) in the cassette. A door (34) is mounted to the housing for movement between a latched position, capturing the cassette between the panel and the door, and a released position. Independently-driven roller assemblies (46, 54, 72) pass part-way through the access opening to capture first tubing portions (44A, 52A, 68A) between the roller tracks (100, 102, 104) and the roller assemblies for peristaltic pumping of fluid. A number of movable pinch elements (48, 80, 90, 96) are extendable through the front panel to selectively pinch the tubing against the door and thus seal the tubing.
