摘要: Red blood cell sensing systems and methods rely upon straightforward measurement geometries. The systems and methods comprise an incident light source, an optical sensor, and a blood collection tube. The systems and methods hold the blood collection tube a predetermined radial distance from the incident light source where a linear relationship exists between sensed reflected light measured by the optical sensor and red blood cell hematocrit in a range of at least 10 to 90. The systems and methods make possible accurate red blood sensing without use of special optical cuvettes, mirrors, or focusing lenses. The systems and methods also make possible the use of standard transparent plastic tubing, without reliance upon special optical cuvettes.

摘要: An optical access disconnect system is useful for detecting the presence of blood. The optical access disconnect system includes one or more optical sensors placed near an access site of a patient, the optical sensors suitable for detecting the presence of blood, especially by detecting a difference in light reflected or absorbed by blood. The optical access disconnect system may also be used as an interlock to assure compliance. A detector may be placed adjacent the access site to detect the access needle, or an object or mark on the access needle or fluid line. A therapy machine, such as a dialysis machine, may be programmed not to start or continue operation unless the needle or fluid line is detected. The detector may be one of the optical sensors, calibrated or adjusted to detect a mark on the needle or access line, or may be another type of detector.

摘要: A connection of a patient's vascular system to an extracorporeal blood treatment machine is monitored to ensure the patient's safety during a procedure. The procedure may be hemodialysis, apheresis, plasmapheresis, a coronary by-pass operation, or other procedure. To ensure safe electrical connection, a contact and a return are connected via a conductive connection into the extracorporeal blood circuit. A current is then generated between the contact and the return and is monitored by a non-contact sensor near an access site of the patient. If the current or other quantity related to the current changes significantly, a signal is sent to the machine or a controller to notify a caregiver or a medical professional. The signal may also be sent to immediately stop a blood pump or other component of the machine.

摘要: Systems and methods for optically sensing characteristics of a blood flow provide a light source having a driver circuit that includes a source of constant current and a modulator that modulates the constant current at a selected carrier frequency for transmission to the light source. The systems and methods also include a light sensor for receiving light from the light source and producing a modulated output proportional to received light intensity. A receiver circuit including a bandpass filter is coupled to the light sensor to receive the modulated output and having a center frequency at or near the selected carrier frequency to eliminate frequency components above and below the selected carrier frequency.

摘要: An access disconnect system includes a blood processing machine having a blood pump operable with blood tubing, first and second conductive contacts located in the blood tubing on an arterial tubing side of a blood filter. The first conductive contact is located upstream of the blood pump and the second conductive contact is located downstream of the blood pump. The first and second conductive contacts are positioned and arranged to form a conductive circuit including a vascular system of a patient and the blood processing machine. The system further includes a source of electric current connected to at least one of the first and second conductive contacts and a transmitter for sending a signal indicative of an amount of current flowing through the conductive circuit when the source of electric current is applied.
