An electric rotary machine is provided with a stator having a stator core of laminated iron plates with a given lamination thickness in an axial direction of the machine and a stator winding wound around the core and a rotor rotatably disposed inside the stator, having a rotor core and a rotor winding. The axial length of the stator core is selected with respect to that of the rotor core in such a way that, when the rotor is thermally extended, the end of the rotor core never extends beyond the end of the stator core. With such a constructional arrangement, there is eliminated an excessive temperature rise at the ends of the stator core, and prevented an insulation deterioration of the stator winding and the burning of the stator core.

The winding strand groups arranged on the inner surface of the annular stator core are fixedly secured to cooling pipes formed in a cylindrical frame, so that the cooling pipes support the winding strand groups thereby to facilitate transportation and assemblage of the stator winding on the one hand and to provide a sufficiently rugged stator winding to withstand the mechanical stress due to vibrations or electrical short-circuiting which are caused during the running of the electric rotary machine.

Disclosed is a method of manufacturing an electromagnetic member having properties of magnetic anisotropy as well as electrical conductivity, comprising the steps of coating an outer circumferential surface of each of a plurality of magnetic strips with a first electrically conductive material to a predetermined thickness to thereby form a plurality of composite magnetic strips, binding the plurality of composite magnetic strips, and filling spaces among the plurality of composite magnetic strips in the bundle with a second electrically conductive material substantially the same as the first electrically conductive material. By this method, a mechanically strong electromagnetic member can be obtained in which adjusting the thickness of the first electrically conductive material, the ratio between the magnetic property and the electrically conductive property can be easily adjusted by adjusting the thickness of the first electrically conductive material and blow-holes can be prevented from being generated.

A squirrel-cage induction motor comprises a stator having a stator core and stator windings divided into first and second coils with different numbers of poles, and a squirrel-cage rotor including a rotor core and a plurality of rotor conductors embedded in the vicinity of the surface of the core. The number of the rotor conductors is the same as the average number of poles of the first and second stator coils, which conductors are arranged equidistantly along the periphery. This induction motor, with the construction of a squirrel-cage rotor, permits a variable speed operation without using any special device.

By the arrangement that all the cooling gas discharged through the fluid passageways is used for cooling the rotor and the stator, cooling efficiency can be increased due to enhanced flow characteristics of the cooling gas.
