    摘要: A method is provided of continuously varying the capacitance of a MEMS varactor having a cantilever assembly mounted on a base portion, the cantilever assembly having a first capacitance plate and a dielectric element mounted thereon, and the base portion having a second capacitance plate mounted thereon. The method includes applying a first actuation voltage to deform the cantilever assembly until the dielectric element contacts the second capacitance plate leaving a gap therebetween, and applying a second actuation voltage larger than the first actuation voltage to further deform the cantilever assembly to reduce the gap between the dielectric element and the second capacitance plate.

    摘要: A method and apparatus for reconfiguring an antenna array by optical control of MEMS switches. A light source is provided to direct light to individual optically sensitive elements which control delivery of actuating bias voltage to the MEMS switches. The light source is preferably separated from the antenna array by a structure which conducts the controlling illumination but provides a high impedance electromagnetically reflective surface which reflects electromagnetic radiation over the antenna operating frequency range with small phase shift, and which is disposed very close to the antenna array. Optically sensitive elements preferably include photoresistive elements, which are best formed in the substrate upon which the MEM switches are formed, and may include photovoltaic elements.

    摘要: A vehicle lighting system includes one or more central light sources, a plurality of optical loads including headlight lenses, an optical fiber network that extends from the light sources to illuminate the headlight lenses and other optical loads, and optical switches and oscillators that include respective input fibers illuminated from the light source and output fibers to respective optical loads, and operate by enabling and disabling optical connections between their input and output fibers. The headlight assemblies switch between high and low beams by moving their fibers vertically, and control beam diffusion by moving the fibers parallel to the lens axes, including an automatic diffusion adjustment for a headlight reflection from a vehicle in front. The switches include various mechanisms for moving the input and output fibers into and out of alignment with each other, including a shaped resilient sleeve, a hinge pivotally joining the fibers, an opaque shutter with a transmissive section movable between the fibers, and also a liquid-based switch that relies upon total internal reflection. A feedback mechanism for some of the switches dims the source lamp when the switch is OFF to conserve energy. The oscillators operate by normally urging an input fiber towards an OFF position, at which it actuates a mechanism that shifts it to an ON position at which the mechanism is deactivated. A failsafe system employs multiple light sources, with each source sharing its light output with the load for another source that has failed.

    摘要: A method for fabricating VHF and/or UHF quartz resonators (for higher sensitivity) in a cartridges design with the quartz resonators requiring much smaller sample volumes than required by conventional resonators, and also enjoying smaller size and more reliable assembly. MEMS fabrication approaches are used to fabricate with quartz resonators in quartz cavities with electrical interconnects on a top side of a substrate for electrical connection to the electronics preferably through pressure pins in a plastic module. An analyte is exposed to grounded electrodes on a single side of the quartz resonators, thereby preventing electrical coupling of the detector signals through the analyte. The resonators can be mounted on the plastic cartridge or on arrays of plastic cartridges with the use of inert bonding material, die bonding or wafer bonding techniques. This allows the overall size, cost, and required biological sample volume to be reduced while increasing the sensitivity for detecting small mass changes.

    摘要: Apparatus for a micro-electro-mechanical switch that provides single pole, double throw switching action. The switch has two input lines and two output lines. The switch has a seesaw cantilever arm with contacts at each end that electrically connect the input lines with the output lines. The cantilever arm is latched into position by frictional forces between structures on the cantilever arm and structures on the substrate in which the cantilever arm is disposed. The state of the switch is changed by applying an electrostatic force at one end of the cantilever arm to overcome the mechanical force holding the other end of the cantilever arm in place.
