Disclosed is a method of making an environmentally durable material, the method requiring providing a material comprising at least one functional group Fc, and subjecting the material to a free radical source such that substantially all functional groups Fc are eliminated but the material is not polymerized. In one embodiment, the functional group Fc is at least one of a nonaromatic carbon-carbon double bond, a hydrogen atom alpha to an aromatic ring, a hydrogen atom alpha to a carbon-carbon double bond, or a hydrogen atom attached to a tertiary substituted carbon. In another embodiment, functional group Fc is present in the material as a contaminant. In one exemplary embodiment, the material comprises from 0.05 to less than 15% by weight of functional group Fc, based on the total weight of the material.

Disclosed is a method of making reduced VOC polymers and coating compositions containing such polymers. The invention provides carbamate-functional resins and coating compositions incorporating said resins that have improved adhesion with respect to subsequently applied films or coatings. More particularly, the invention relates to carbamate-functional addition polymers having at least 250 grams of polymer per carbamate group which are made with less than 35 percent by weight of nonfunctional monomers, preferably with less than 20 percent by weight and most preferably from 0 to less than 10 percent by weight, based on the total weight of the polymer. The invention further provides a method of making a carbamate-functional polymer and carbamate-functional polymers made by the claimed method. Finally, the invention provides a method for improving the adhesion of a first coating composition to a subsequently applied material as well as a method of making a composite comprising a coated substrate, an adhesive composition, and a glass having at least one surface.

The present invention provides a coating composition containing 1) a carbamate-functional resin having in its structure a hyperbranched or star polyol core, a first chain extension based on a polycarboxylic acid or anbydride, a second chain extension based on an epoxy containing compound, and having carbamate functional groups on the core, the second chain extension, or both; and 2) a second resin containing functional groups reactive with the carbamate groups on the carbamate-functional resin. In one embodiment, the coating compositions are used as a cloarcoat to be applied over a basecoat to form a composite coating. The compositions exhibit a combination of desirable properties, such as scratch and mar resistance, resistance to environmental etch, good intercoat adhesion, and high solids.
