A universal joint assembly having a pair of yokes with yoke arms interconnected by a trunnion cross includes a seal member extending between the trunnion cross and a bushing of the assembly, with the seal including a resilient portion defining a lubricant reservoir from which lubricant may be provided for roller bodies of the assembly in order to insure adequate lubrication and long life. The seal is further provided with ribs which define between the seal and the trunnion cross ducts for lubricant flow from the reservoir to portions of the joint assembly including the roller bodies.

A drive shaft assembly particulary suited for power transmission in motor vehicles wherein a drive shaft has a universal joint connected to at least one end thereof with a sealing boot attached in sealing engagement between the outer joint member of the universal joint and the drive shaft. The invention is particularly directed to the provision of an elastomeric cover on the outer surface of the drive shaft, the elastomeric cover extending along the shaft from the exterior of the sealing boot to within the region enclosed by the boot in order to provide an arrangement which is resistant to damage, corrosion, and wear and which may be conveniently fitted and assembled. The elastomeric cover may be provided with internal ribs to establish ventilation channels for the shaft assembly.

A sealing boot for connection between an outer member of a universal joint assembly and a shaft member associated with an inner member of the joint, the boot being formed with a first end portion which is connected with the joint outer member and a second end portion which is connected with the shaft member. The first end portion of the boot affords a sealing face which engages an end face of the outer joint member and which extends generally radially relative thereto and an axially extending cylindrical portion which fits over the exterior of the outer joint member in order to connect the first end portion of the boot with the outer joint member. The first end portion of the boot may be formed with external reinforcing ribs and internal inwardly extending projections which act as stops to limit movement of the boot if the joint is over articulated. The second end portion of the boot may be conventionally secured to the shaft member or it may be formed with inwardly extending sealing lips.

A resonant circuit which includes the input capacitance of the clock pulse inputs of a shift register (10) is pulsed by a sinusoidal wave at voltage peaks of the wave by an oscillator delivering barely enough energy to overcome the damping of the resonant circuit. The oscillator may be crystal controlled and, instead of having a single ended output for delivering energy only on peaks of one polarity, may be in push-pull form reinforcing oscillation peaks of both polarities. This circuit is easily combined with arrangements for switching oscillator frequency from one value to another and/or arrangements for interrupting the clock pulse output for timed intervals after each loading or unloading of the shift register. The loss power dissipation is reduced to about 6% of the loss power dissipation of a square pulse drive for the clocking of the same shift register. The low loss drive for shift register advancement is applicable to a variety of analog stepped storage and delay devices, such as charge coupled devices and "bucket brigade" devices.
