摘要: Disclosed are integrated electro-absorption modulators (EAM) that are structured and/or operated to improve uniformity of the photocurrent density along the active region. In various embodiments, this improvement results from increased optical absorption at the rear of the EAM, e.g., as achieved by heating a region at the rear, increasing a bias voltage applied across the EAM towards the rear, or changing a material composition of an intrinsic layer towards the rear. In another embodiment, the improvement is achieved by coupling light from a waveguide into the EAM active region continuously along a length of the EAM, using overlap between a tapered section of the waveguide and the EAM.

摘要: A fixation system for a bone conduction device is disclosed. An abutment is coupled to a bone anchor such that vibrations applied to the abutment pass into the bone anchor. The abutment defines a conduction path to the bone anchor such that vibrations applied to the abutment are transferred to the bone anchor. The abutment comprises a plurality of interlocking stacked plates disposed adjacent the bone anchor, wherein the plates form part of the conduction path. The fixation system also comprises a vibratory coupler extending from the bone conduction device, comprising a second conduction surface and a magnet, wherein the magnet attracts to the abutment so as to couple the second conduction surface to the abutment, thereby enabling vibrations to pass through the conduction path. The plates are configured to slide laterally in response to tangential forces incident upon the abutment.

摘要: Methods and systems for fitting a bone conduction device are provided herein. These methods and systems comprise determining a gain to be used by the bone conduction device in providing signals at a particular frequency. In determining the gain, a fitting system may provide a test sound that is modulated between a first signal provided to a speaker and a second audible signal provided to a bone conduction device. The first and second audible signal may comprise properties such that when the two signals are added together they produce a constant amplitude output. In an embodiment, each of the first and second audible signals may comprise substantially identical frequency characteristics and signal amplitudes, such as, for example, equal amplitude sinusoids centered on the particular frequency for the measurement. When each of these two audible signals are provided to a recipient of the bone conduction device, the recipient may perceive a variance in the intensity of the sounds when the intensity of the two sounds generated by the two audible signals do not give rise to the same psychophysical loudness. If the recipient perceives this variance, the gain of the bone conduction device may be adjusted to increase or decrease the loudness of the sound provided via the bone conduction device to reduce or eliminate the variance.

摘要: A cochlear implant electrode assembly device comprising an elongate electrode carrier member, a stiffening element, and a stiffening sheath that at least partially envelops the elongate member. The member is made of a resiliently flexible first material and has a plurality of electrodes mounted thereon. The member has a first configuration that allows it to be inserted into an implantee's cochlea. The member also has a second configuration wherein the member is curved to match an inside surface of the cochlea, and at least one intermediate configuration between the first and second configurations. Both the stiffening element and sheath are made of a material that is relatively stiffer than the member. The stiffening element and the stiffening sheath in combination bias the elongate member into the first configuration. If either the stiffening element or the stiffening sheath is removed or deactivated, the elongate member adopts an intermediate configuration.
