An apparatus for supplying a fluid to a passageway in a cutting tool includes a housing having a rotatable spindle thereon, the tool being releasably supported on the spindle for rotation therewith. A cooling medium supply ring rotatably supported on a shank portion of the tool has a first surface which faces substantially radially outwardly and slightly in the direction of rotation of the tool. A coupling head on the housing has a second surface thereon positioned for sealing engagement with the first surface when they are brought into angular alignment through rotation of the supply ring caused by frictional engagement of the supply ring and rotating tool. Fluid passes from a passageway in the coupling head through aligned openings in the first and second surfaces, into passageways in the supply ring, and then through an opening in the shank portion of the tool and into the passageway therein.

A boring tool for working a small diameter bore in a workpiece having a shaft of circular cross-section comprising a clamping portion for supporting the tool and a neck portion extending forwardly therefrom. The forward end of the neck portion carries a cutting plate. The cutting plate is located entirely within the circular cross-section of the neck portion, except for a cutting point on such cutting plate which extends somewhat laterally beyond the circular cross-section of the neck portion. The neck portion has a channel of semicircular cross-section which spirals from the front end thereof toward the clamping portion of the shaft, the spiral being in the directions of rotation and of feed of the workpiece with respect to the tool. In a modification, a cuttings breaker is mounted to overlie the cutting plate, extends close to the cutting point and has an axially extending cuttings breaking channel running the length thereof parallel to the axis of the neck portion and opening toward the cutting plate. Such cuttings breaking channel conveys cuttings from the cutting point to the spiral, circular cross-section cuttings channel in the neck portion.

A device for connecting two tool parts having a common axis. The device includes a fitting pin projecting axially from the first tool part and a connecting sleeve projecting from the second tool part and having a mating bore for receiving the fitting pin. A tightening mechanism equipped with a tightening bolt movable in a crossbore of the fitting point assures a sufficient planar surface to planar surface tightening between the two tool parts. Aside from the tightening in direction of the tightening bolt, a clamping of the fitting pin into the mating bore of the connecting sleeve is achieved through suitable measures, the clamping extending transversely with respect to the tightening-bolt direction and resulting in an automatic centering of the tool parts with respect to their common axis and in a reinforcement of the connection transversely with respect to the tightening-bolt axis.

A cutting plate carrier insertable in a holder of a machine tool, in particular a lathe tool. The carrier has a plane base surface and a substantially circular plan, the axis of which coincides with the axis of a central screw thread. The cutting plate carrier is provided with a recess for a polygonal cutting plate having a central bore. The cutting plate can be fixed in the recess by means of a clamping screw which can be screwed into the central screw thread. For the cutting plate, the recess has a plane supporting surface arranged parallel to the base surface and a number of bearing surfaces corresponding to the number of lateral surfaces of the cutting plate and extending parallel thereto. These bearing surfaces are arranged at the same distance (a) from the central screw thread. A second screw thread for screwing in a retaining screw inserted into the holder from below is provided parallel to the central screw thread.

For clamping a turnable cutter blade on a tool holder a clamping jaw is provided which has a two-arm lever construction. The clamping jaw has in its center part a substantially cylindrical projection. This projection engages a cylindrical recess of the tool holder. A locking screw extends through an opening in the center part and in the projection of the clamping jaw and is threadedly received in an internally threaded opening of the tool holder. The locking screw urges the clamping jaw into clamping engagement with the cutter blade.

In a boring tool for making borings in solid metal material of workpieces, at least one cutting bit is interchangeably arranged in a recess, at the end of the borer shank. The polygonal cutting bit has a plurality of cutting edges of equal length, of which two are in engagement with the workpiece at each time. For the purposes of improved centering of the borer, these two operative cutting edges each form approximately the same angle to a line parallel to the borer axis. A plurality of cutting bits at different radial distances may also be arranged in the boring tool, with two cutting edges of each cutting bit being in engagement with the workpiece and the working regions of the cutting edges of adjacent cutting bits each overlapping somewhat.

The tool-changing device has a changing head (7). By means of this, tool holders (4) with cylindrical parts (5) of different diameters can be inserted into a tool holder receiver (1). The changing head (7) has, at the end thereof which faces towards the tool holder (4) concerned at any moment, a substantially segmental part (7a) and a first centering recess provided in the latter, which first centering recess is formed by a part-cylindrical centering surface (8) having a radius corresponding approximately to the radius (R1) of the cylindrical part (5) of a first tool holder (4). Portions of a second part-cylindrical centering surface (9) are provided on the two opposite sides respectively of the segmental part (7a) on a part (7b) of the changing head (7) which is widened out in an axial direction with respect to the said segmental part, this second part-cylindrical centering surface (9) being concentric with the first centering surface (8) and its relatively long radius corresponding approximately to that of a cylindrical part of a second tool holder. The latter has near its radial screw-threaded bore a recess for the segmental part (7a). In the center of the first centering recess there is provided a connecting bolt which extends in the radial direction of movement of the changing head (7), is capable of being motor driven in either of two opposite directions of rotation at will and has an external screw-thread (10b) for engagement in the screw-threaded bore (6).
