    摘要: A machine tool comprising a base, with a guide surface, a workpiece holder on the base, a movable tool carriage, and a motor for advancing the carriage along the guide surface toward the workpiece. Hydrostatic bearings are situated in the carriage for discharging fluid, such as oil, into the narrow gap defined between the carriage and the guide surface. A pre-load rail is secured to the movable carriage, and a plurality of pockets are defined in the pre-load rail. A hydrostatic pre-load piston, with an enlarged head and a depending base, is located in each pocket. A shallow depression is formed in the face of each piston, and an annular wall surrounds the depression, so that the piston restores itself to an equilibrium condition. The pre-load pistons are located in opposition to the hydrostatic bearings. An O-ring encircles the base of the piston, and allows floating, and tilting, movement of the piston within the pocket, while serving as a seal for the pocket. The individual pre-load pistons float and tilt to accommodate diverse localized distortions, anomalies, imperfections, machining errors, and the like, in the carriage, and in the guide surface.

    摘要: A press for press-fitting an axle tube into a differential housing having a locator and accurately locating a flange on the tube relative the locator by offsetting flange mislocation, deflection of the tube and press and deflection and/or shifting of the tube and housing fixtures during press-fitting. The press has a ram in operable communication with a drive and a computer in communication with the ram and drive to accurately control movement of the ram and depth of insertion of each tube. Carried by the ram is a probe that senses flange location relative on the tube for determining deviation in flange location and offsetting depth of insertion to compensate for any such deviation. Another sensor communicates to the computer the insertion force the ram is applying to the tube to determine tube and press deflection. Where a pair of tubes are inserted at the same time, the computer compares insertion force of both tubes to determine if there is any force imbalance causing deflection and/or shifting of the workpiece fixtures. During insertion, and preferably as the tube is nearing full depth of insertion, the computer communicates with each force sensor and preferably at least one lookup table to select an offset for each tube corresponding to press and tube deflection and another offset corresponding to force imbalance. Thereafter, the computer applies the offsets to the insertion depth of each tube to accurately locate each flange relative to the housing locator when assembly is completed.

    摘要: A hemming apparatus has a stand which is axially and rotatably adjustable, a carrier pivotally connected to the stand and a hemming tool adjustably received on a slide assembly which in turn is slidably received on the carrier. The hemming tool can be rotatably adjusted relative to the carrier to properly orient the hemming tool on the slide assembly for engagement with a flange of a sheet metal panel to hem the flange. Further, the stand can be axially and rotatably adjusted and the carrier can be pivotally adjusted relative to the stand to vary the orientation and path of travel of the slide assembly and hence the hemming tool relative to the sheet metal panels. Desirably, this readily adjustable and versatile hemming apparatus can be used to form or hem the flange of substantially any sheet metal panel having contours or corners of substantially any configuration or orientation.

    摘要: An engine block is located and clamped on a pallet and then brought into a boring station where the pallet is located and clamped on a shuttle. The shuttle moves solely along a straight horizontal path to move the engine block into the work station, locate the engine block during a machining operation, and then transfer the block out of the work station. First and second three-axis boring machines at respective opposite sides of the block locate crankshaft and camshaft boring bars for different engine blocks and then simultaneously back bore both the crankshaft and camshaft bores. A computer numerical control (CNC) positions the boring bars and the block and controls other machining parameters for different engine blocks. The CNC causes the shuttle to move to a location horizontally offset from a final machining location so that the boring bar axes are offset horizontally from the bearing bore axes and the boring bars are then inserted into the block. The shuttle is then shifted horizontally to the final machining position for the back boring operation.

    摘要: An intelligent fixture system has the ability to clamp and machine a family of nonidentical parts without requiring the use of separate dedicated fixtures for each part. A first part sensing system identifies a part to be machined and configures the clamps on a fixture in accordance with the size and shape of the part. A second part sensing system determines the exact location of the part after it has been clamped into the fixture and develops error signals representative of position and orientation of the actual position of the clamped part relative to the intended position and orientation of the clamped part. X, Y, and Z position errors signals and roll error signals of the clamped part are provided as offsets to the machine tools which will machine the part in order to compensate for the errors. Pitch and yaw errors in the orientation of the clamped part are used to adjust the position of a micro-positioner located between the fixture and the pallet which carries the fixture in which the part is clamped in order to correct the pitch and yaw of the part.

    摘要: A cutting tool insert is mounted on a flexure member that is mounted on the end of a boring bar. The construction of the flexure member is such that it is compliant along a radial axis perpendicular to the direction of tool advancement, but relatively stiff along a feed axis in the direction of tool feed, and along a cutting axis in the direction of tool rotation. Any displacement of the flexure member and cutting tool insert as a result of workpiece engagement or boring bar deflection is sensed by laser detectors. Signals from the laser detectors are coupled to a computer that rotates with the boring bar and are used to provide feedback signals to an actuator in contact with the flexure member. The actuator displaces the flexure member to correct the position of the tool insert.

Preferably, at least a pair of rollers are carried by the apparatus with one or more rollers forming a pre-hem of the flange and a final hem roller constructed to complete the hem of the flange area.
