Abstract: A sensor assembly for sensing a physiological characteristic includes a power source, a power control switch, and a power latch configured to latch an output of the power control switch. The sensor assembly also includes a power converter coupled to the power control switch. The power converter is configured to step down a voltage of the latched output of the power control switch for delivery of the latched output to one or more components of the sensor assembly. The power control switch is configured to inhibit consumption of power from the power source when the sensor assembly is in a pre-deployment state and output the latched output to the power converter in response to transition of the sensor assembly from the pre-deployment state to a deployed state.

Abstract: An insertable cardiac monitor (ICM) with induction-based recharging capabilities and a transmitting coil for recharging the same are disclosed. The length of the monitoring performed by the ICM is extended and the functionality of the ICM enhanced, by including an internal energy harvesting module that allows for charging the ICM at a high speed without burning the patient or overheating components of the ICM. Internally, the energy harvesting module includes at least two overlapping receiving coils that are spaced to be orthogonal to each other and that have a tilt angle of substantially 45°. Such overlapping wire combination allows to minimize mutual inductance of the solenoid coils and increase the rate at which energy can be provided to the energy harvesting module. Further, the rate at which the energy is transmitted from the outside can be increased by defining in a transmitting coil a substantially triangular gap.

Abstract: A portable vein viewer apparatus may be battery powered and hand-held to reveal patient vasculature information to aid in venipuncture processes. The apparatus comprises a first laser diode emitting infrared light, and a second laser diode emitting only visible wavelengths, wherein vasculature absorbs a portion of the infrared light causing reflection of a contrasted infrared image. A pair of silicon PIN photodiodes, responsive to the contrasted infrared image, causes transmission of a corresponding signal. The signal is processed through circuitry to amplify, sum, and filter the outputted signals, and with the use of an image processing algorithm, the contrasted image is projected onto the patient's skin surface using the second laser diode. Revealed information may comprise vein location, depth, diameter, and degree of certainty of vein locations. Projection of vein images may be a positive or a negative image. Venipuncture needles may be coated to provide visibility in projected images.

Abstract: An automatic insertion device and method of using the same is provided. A vibrator and an extender are connected to a penetrating member and are both in electrical communication with a controller. A detector identifies a subcutaneous target for insertion and the insertion angle, distance and trajectory for the penetrating member are calculated. The vibrator provides vibrations to the penetrating member and the extender advances the penetrating member for insertion. The vibrator and extender are in electrical communication with one another during the insertion process and adjustments to the insertion speed are made based on feedback of vibrational load encountered by the vibrator during insertion, and adjustments to the vibrations are made based on feedback of insertion load encountered by the extender during insertion. Iterative samples are taken to constantly adjust the operation of one motor based on the operations and feedback from the other motor.
