The present invention relates to an advanced system for the removal of air pollutants from combustion and non-combustion processes that generate air pollutants that are regulated by environmental agencies. The pollutants include, but are not limited to, particulate matter; acid gases including sulphur dioxide, hydrogen chloride and hydrogen fluoride; metals such as mercury, dioxins, VOCs and reagents such as ammonia. The system collects and processes the polluted gas stream through two forms of wet method scrubbing technology. The gas is first passed through a wet scrubbing reactor capable of complete interaction between the gas and the selected liquid scrubbing reagent at one or more interfaces. The scrubbing medium is selected for its reactivity with the pollutants targeted in the process, its cost and impact on the environment. From the exit of the scrubbing reactor the gas is directed through a wet electrostatic precipitator to remove the remaining targeted pollutants to very high removal efficiency.

A method for the reduction and prevention of mercury emissions into the environment from combusted fossil fuels or other off-gases with the use of hypobromite is disclosed. The hypobromite is used for the capture of mercury from the resulting flue gases using a flue gas desulfurization system or scrubber. The method uses hypobromite in conjunction with a scrubber to capture mercury and lower its emission and/or re-emission with stack gases. The method allows the use of coal as a cleaner and environmentally friendlier fuel source as well as capturing mercury from other processing systems.

A scrubber for removing pollutant compounds from a gas stream. At least one gas channel introduces the gas stream to a lower portion of the scrubber. An inlet chamber directs the gas stream upwards to form a vertical gas stream. A constriction section has a vertical axis of symmetry and includes a centrally arranged venturi nozzle, and is above and in flow connection with an upper end of the inlet chamber for accelerating the vertical gas stream. A reaction chamber is arranged above and in flow connection with the constriction section. A reagent in the reaction chamber converts pollutant compounds in the gas stream to reaction products. A discharge channel in flow connection with the reaction chamber discharges gas and particles including the reaction products from the reaction chamber. A particle separator separates particles from the gas. A return channel recycles a portion of the particles to the reaction chamber.

Air is injected into an incineration device along with a fuel and is supplemented by a oxygen feed. The resulting combustion waste gas stream contains contaminants such as nitrogen oxides and is quenched, then fed to a reaction zone where it will contact ozone for a predetermined period of time. The thus treated combustion waste gas stream can be fed to a scrubber assembly where the reaction products formed by the reaction of ozone and the contaminants are removed.

The sorbent composition includes a porous carbonaceous sorbent such as powdered activated carbon (PAC) and a solid particulate additive that functions as a flow-aid to enhance the pneumatic conveyance properties of the sorbent composition. The solid particulate additive may be a flake-like material, for example a phyllosilicate mineral or graphite.
