THE SOLUBLE ORGANIC SULPHUR COMPOUND MAY BE THIOACETAMIDE OR THIOUREA. IF DESIRED A FURTHER CONSTITUENT MAY BE PROVIDED IN THE ELECTROLYTE AND THE LUBRICANT COATING MAY BE PROVIDED AS A RESULT OF REACTION OF THE SULPHUR CONTAINING CONSTITUENT WITH THE FURTHER CONSTITUENT. THE FURTHER CONSTITUENT MAY BE AMMONIUM MOLYBDATE. THE LUBRICANT COATING MAY BE REMOVED AFTER PERFORMANCE OF THE METAL FORMING OPERATION BY PASSING THE ARTICLE THROUGH A FURTHER ELECTROLYTE THROUGH WHICH A CURRENT IS PASSED TO REMOVE THE LUBRICANT COATING.

In addition to other value added features, a treatment portion of the pickle line includes: (1) a two-high temper mill operable to break scale on the strip as well as elongate, shape correct and controllably reduce the gauge of the strip; (2) a pickling zone including at least one V-shaped, shallow-path pickling tank within which a plurality of sparging ports dispense substantially laminar flows of acid solution toward the bottom surface of the strip as it passes through the pickling tank; and (3) a displaceable inspection table desirably cooperating with lights and mirrors to permit simultaneous inspection of the top and bottom surfaces of the steel after pickling.

The invention relates to a method for continuous direct casting of a metal strip, whereby said strip is cast by solidification of liquid metal in an ingot mould with cooled moving walls and a hot rolling of said strip is carried out in line, characterised in that a product is applied to the surface of the strip on exit from the ingot, which leaves a layer of lubricant on the surface when the strip is hot rolled and which causes a gas to be given off which contributes to the protection of said surface from oxidation. The invention further relates to a continuous direct casting plant for a thin metal strip, of the type comprising an ingot mould with moving cooled walls, where the solidification of said strip takes place and an in-line hot rolling unit for said solidified strip, characterised in comprising means for application of a product to the surface of said strip at the exit from the ingot, which leaves a layer of lubricant on the surface at the entry to the hot rolling unit.
