    摘要: A clinch-in fastener with a cylindrical body having a top, a bottom, sides and an axial internal bore. The fastener has a single shank at the bottom end of the body having a top surface orthogonal to the bore and a chamfer tapering to the bottom of the body. The top surface of the shank is adapted for receiving the cold flow of material surrounding a receiving hole of a workpiece. The shank may have a plurality of notches in its outermost edge that extend through both the top surface of the shank and the chamfer. The bore of the fastener extends completely through the fastener body from top to bottom and may be threaded. A fastener installation system having a tool with means for affixation to a rotary and vertically reciprocal element of an industrial machine. The tip of the tool has a distal end face with at least one arcuate displacer adapted for deforming a workpiece as the tool rotates and is pressed against the workpiece. A bore within the tip holds a fastener installed by the tool. The displacer is vertically and radially tapered along an arcuate ridge centered about the axial bore. The width of the displacer is also tapered to a point.

    摘要: The present disclosure relates to riveting apparatuses, riveting devices, and methods for their use. An example riveting apparatus includes a pneumatically operated riveting tool having a working end for squeezing a rivet. The riveting apparatus includes a support bracket connected to the riveting tool proximate the working end, the support bracket having arms projecting on each side of the riveting tool. The riveting apparatus also includes a pair of spaced-apart edge rollers coupled to the support arms. The edge rollers are configured to rollably engage an edge of a work-piece so as to support the weight of the riveting tool and enable movable adjustment of the working end relative to the work-piece. The riveting apparatus includes a handle rotatably mounted to the riveting tool to enable axial rotation of the handle, the handle having an actuatable switch configured to selectively operate the riveting tool.

Each fastener may be a radially expandable fastener having a radially expandable portion received in one of the fastener openings of one of the rungs. Each radially expandable portion is in an expanded configuration and frictionally engages the corresponding rung inside the corresponding fastener opening to inhibit withdrawal of the radially expandable fastener from the fastener opening. Each fastener opening may be defined by an interior surface of the corresponding rung and at least one projection extending radially inward from the interior surface relative to the fastener opening. The fastener may have an engagement portion frictionally engaging the corresponding at least one projection inside the corresponding fastener opening to inhibit withdrawal of the radially expandable fastener from the corresponding fastener opening

These in particular are applicable to the assembly of aircraft structures.

    摘要: A wire mesh rivet (13) is provided which is used to produce a wire mesh isolator (11) in a bore (9) of a substrate such as a heat shield (7) for a vehicle exhaust system. The rivet (13) comprises a unitary wire mesh structure (19) which has a collar (15) and a shank (17). The collar (15) has a higher density than the shank (17), e.g., the collar (15) has the density of the finished isolator (11). The rivet (13) is formed into the finished isolator (11) by compressing the shank (17) to form a second collar, while restraining the original collar (15) from substantially changing its shape. The rivet (13) can include a metal insert (23) which prevents the wire mesh of the finished isolator (11) from experiencing high levels of compression when the substrate is fastened to its supporting structure. The rivets (13) can be carried by a dispensing strip (31) and can be formed into the finished isolator (11) using forming equipment (39) whose dimensions are compatible with the limited space available with some substrates.

    摘要: A method of isolating a metallic fastener from a carbon-fiber composite panel includes inserting the metallic fastener within an electrically isolating annular collar; inserting the metallic fastener and electrically isolating annular collar within a hole defined by the carbon-fiber composite panel; and securing the metallic fastener to the carbon-fiber composite panel. The annular collar may be circumferentially disposed about the metallic fastener such that the annular collar separates and electrically isolates the entire metallic fastener from the carbon-fiber composite panel. As such, the annular collar may minimize the galvanic reaction between the fastener and the carbon-fiber composite panel.

The biasing member biasly maintains the outer member in a first position, which corresponds to a contoured portion of the mandrel, when the outer member is either on the access or the blind side of a workpiece. The biasing member is compressible to allow the outer member to move into a second position as the outer member is moved through an opening in the workpiece. In the first position, the outer member includes a maximum outer circumference that is larger than the opening of the structural workpiece. In the second position, the outer member includes a maximum outer circumference that fits within the opening of the structural workpiece.
