摘要: A coated ceramic cutting insert for removing material from a workpiece, as well as a method for making the same, that includes a ceramic substrate with a rake surface and at least one flank surface wherein a cutting edge is at the juncture therebetween. A wear-resistant coating scheme that includes an alumina-containing base coating layer region, which has at least one exposed alumina coating layer, deposited by chemical vapor deposition on the substantially all of the surfaces of the ceramic substrate that experience wear during removal of material from the workpiece. The exposed alumina coating layer exhibits a blasted stress condition ranging between about 50 MPa (tensile stress) and about −2 GPa (compressive) as measured by XRD using the Psi tilt method and the (024) reflection of alumina. The exposed alumina coating layer is the result of wet blasting a titanium-containing outer coating layer region from the surface of the alumina-containing base coating layer region.

The indicating layer is formed on a flank face, on the base layer on the entire surface or a part of a region A2 except for a specific region A1, and on a rake face, on the base layer on the entire surface or a part of a region B2 except for a specific region B1. In the region A1 and the region B1, the base layer is exposed at the surface, and has compressive residual stress in one or both of the region A1 and the region B1.

摘要: The present invention provides an indexable insert (1) which includes a body (8), a base layer disposed on the body (8), and a wear-indicating layer disposed on a part of the base layer, wherein at least one surface of the body (8) serves as a rake face (2), at least one other surface of the body serves as a flank face (3), the rake face (2) being connected to the flank face (3) with a cutting edge (4) therebetween, the base layer has a color different from that of the wear-indicating layer, and the wear-indicating layer is disposed on the rake face and on the base layer entirely or partially in a region A2 other than a region A1 that extends to a distance of 0.2 mm or more and less than 4.0 mm from the cutting edge.

摘要: A femoral reamer (100) can include a base material (304) and a coating (302) disposed on the base material. The coating can be harder than the base material and, as a result, the femoral reamer can wear more slowly than if the coating was absent. The coating can be a different color than the base material. When the coating is worn off, such wear can be easily observed from a visual inspection of the femoral reamer. The coating can have an initial thickness (i.e., a thickness prior to use) that is related to a tolerance on a size and/or a shape of a hole drilled by the femoral reamer. When the coating is worn off, the size and/or the shape of the hole drilled by the femoral reamer may be at or near an edge of a specified tolerance range. The femoral reamer can be part of a kit and a method.
