For use as electrode material for a lithium battery, porous templates are impregnated with a carbon feedstock that can be graphitized. This frequently results in only a low thickness of the deposited, graphite-like layer, such that generally several such infiltration and carbonation processes must be carried out consecutively. In order to provide a cost-effective product which is made of porous carbon and has high porosity and a low surface, according to the invention a method comprises the following method steps: (a) preparing a porous carbon structure having a large specific surface, (b) infiltrating the carbon structure with a precursor substance for carbon that can be graphitized, (c) carbonizing the precursor substance to form the carbon product having a low specific surface, wherein preparing the carbon structure according to method step (a) comprises the following: (I) preparing a template containing pores, (II) infiltrating the pores of the template with a solution that contains a precursor of carbon that cannot be graphitized, (III) carbonizing the precursor forming the carbon structure having the first specific surface, and (IV) removing the template.

A compact hydrogen generator is coupled to or integrated with a fuel cell for portable power applications. Hydrogen is produced via thermocatalytic decomposition (cracking, pyrolysis) of hydrocarbon fuels in oxidant-free environment. The apparatus can utilize a variety of hydrocarbon fuels, including natural gas, propane, gasoline, kerosene, diesel fuel, crude oil (including sulfurous fuels). The hydrogen-rich gas produced is free of carbon oxides or other reactive impurities, so it could be directly fed to any type of a fuel cell. The catalysts for hydrogen production in the apparatus are carbon-based or metal-based materials and doped, if necessary, with a sulfur-capturing agent. Additionally disclosed are two novel processes for the production of two types of carbon filaments, and a novel filamentous carbon product. The hydrogen generator can be conveniently integrated with high temperature fuel cells to produce an efficient and self-contained source of electrical power.

A bromine-impregnated activated carbon wherein the contents of any alkali metal, any alkali earth metal and iron are not higher than 0.3 wt % and the content of bromine is not lower than 3 wt %, with respect to the weight of a material activated carbon. The bromine-impregnated activated carbon has improved adsorption characteristics to the alkyl sulfides, which have not been sufficiently removed by activated carbons prepared by the conventional techniques. Further, variations in the absorption characteristics can be reduced and the activated carbon can exhibit a stable performance in removing the alkyl sulfides.

The modified activated carbon comprises a uniform porous carbon membrane formed on an exposed surface of the activated carbon substrate. The carbon membrane can mediate the absorption and/or adsorption kinetics of the activated carbon substrate. The modified activated carbon, which can be incorporated into one or more components of a cigarette, can selectively remove gaseous constituents from mainstream smoke during smoking.

By surface-modifying the activated carbon with a layer, the activated carbon can have increased mechanical strength and the fine carbon particles among the activated carbon can be fastened to the layer. Therefore, the layer allows for the level of free fine carbon particles among the activated carbon to be reduced. Surface-modified activated carbon can be used in smoking articles so as to allow for adsorption by the activated carbon with reduced free fine carbon particles in the smoking article and the smoke produced.
