Blow down water from an evaporative cooling system, such as a cooling tower, is treated for re-use as cooling make up water. Water in or entering the cooling system is treated with chemicals, for example corrosion inhibitors, scale inhibitors, or biocides. These chemicals are preferably chosen to be compatible with ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membrane systems. Blow down water is removed from the cooling systems and filtered first through a UF membrane unit. The UF membrane unit removes total suspended solids (TSS), microorganisms and organic contaminants, among other things, from the blow down water. Permeate from the UF membrane unit is then filtered through a reverse osmosis (RO) membrane unit to remove, for example, divalent ions and hardness from the water. The RO membrane unit is preferably operated at a high cross flow velocity to reduce fouling. Permeate from the RO system is returned to the cooling system as make up water.

This invention pertains to the use of certain phosphorus compounds in conjunction with other materials which characterize cleaners of alkaline earth metal salts, metal oxide/hydroxide salts, and silica/silicate salts, particularly citric acid, malic acid, oxalic acid, ammonium bifluoride and sodium bifluoride. Amount of the phosphorus compounds is 0.5 to 70%, preferably 2 to 40%, based on 100% of a cleaner composition which includes the phosphorus compounds. Suitable phosphorus compounds are selected from aminoalkyl and hydroxyalkyl phosphonic acids and phosphonates, phosphonoalkanepolycarboxylic acids and salts thereof, polyphosphoric acids and salts thereof, and polyol phosphate esters.

A non-caking and freely flowing granulated composition of high abrasion-resistance which comprises a polymer phosphate and an ion-exchanging alkali metal aluminum silicate is disclosed. At least part of the polymer phosphate in said composition is a highly condensed phosphate, preferably of a phosphorous pentoxide-content between about 64% and about 69%. Said polymer phosphate may contain sodium tripolyphosphate in an amount between about 95% and 0% by weight and preferably between 80% and 60% by weight. Such a composition may also contain a water-soluble tenside which is liquid at room temperature. The process of producing such a granulated composition comprising a highly condensed phosphate and an alkali metal aluminum silicate, comprises granulation of the mixture of polymer phosphate and alkali metal aluminum silicate by spraying water or a tenside solution thereon. The resulting granulated composition is useful as additive to washing, rinsing, and cleaning-agents, as water-softening agents, as textile-washing agents, and the like.

Mixtures of Thiophosphates, pyrophosphates containing both oxygen and sulfur, and oxygen phosphates are effective as corrosion inhibitors particularly in aqueous and/or oxygenated systems. The mixtures are synergistically more effective as corrosion inhibitors than each component individually. These synergistic mixtures are also effective for other uses such as for scale preventatives, etc.
