Provided is an aluminum oxycarbide composition production method capable of increasing a yield of Al4O4C while reducing a content rate of Al4C3 and achieving high productivity, and an aluminum oxycarbide composition. The method comprises: preparing a blend substantially consisting of a carbon-raw material having a mean particle diameter of 0.5 mm or less and an alumina-raw material having a mean particle diameter of 350 μm or less, wherein a mole ratio of the carbon-raw material to the alumina-raw material (C/Al2O3) is in a range of 0.8 to 2.0; homogeneously mixing the blend to allow a variation in C component to fall within ±10%; and melting the obtained mixture in an arc furnace at 1850° C. or more.

The filter can be made by forming a porous article from refractory particles, e.g. refractory oxide, carbide or graphite, and a carbon-rich binder, e.g. tar, pitch or an organic (preferably aromatic) polymer that degrades to form carbon on pyrolysis, and then firing the porous article to generate the carbon matrix in which the refractory particles are embedded. The porous article is preferably made by coating a reticulated polyurethane foam with binder and refractory particles, and firing at preferably no higher than 800° C.

Method for manufacturing a carbonized carbon-carbon composite preform, by: mixing (a) chopped carbon fiber, chopped stabilized pitch fiber, or chopped oxidized polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fiber, (b) thermoplastic pitch binder powder, and (c) activated carbon powder to form a mixture of 15-60 parts by weight of chopped carbon fiber or chopped stabilized pitch fiber or chopped oxidized PAN, 28-83 parts by weight of thermoplastic pitch binder powder, and 1-12 parts by weight of activated carbon powder; depositing this mixture into a mold; pressing/heating the materials in the mold to form a preform by compaction; removing the compacted preform from the mold; and carbonizing the compacted preform. The preform is preferably configured in the form of an aircraft landing system brake disc.
