Abstract: Materials such as poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and lithium cobalt (III) oxide (LCO) are recovered and recycled from cathode films isolated from end-of-life batteries, including lithium-ion batteries. Cathode films are immersed in solution including N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), N-methyl-2-pyrrolidine (NMP), a tetrahydrofuran (THF):NMP mixture, or a THF:DMF mixture. The solution is able to dissolve PVDF, which can then be separated from LCO and a conductive substrate component of the cathode films via alumina column separation. A PVDF product can be precipitated and recovered, while the LCO and conductive substrate can be recovered directly from the alumina column separator. Both the PVDF and LCO are of suitable quality for use in new cathode films. Such recovery is shown to be achievable even at low solid to liquid ratio during the dissolution process. Thus, economically feasible solvent-based recycling of battery cathodes is enabled to prolong the service life of cathode materials and reduce polymeric waste.

Abstract: A system to carry out solvent targeted recovery and precipitation (STRAP) to recover individual polymers from multilayer plastic films or mixed plastic wastes, comprising a down-sizing device to shred the plastic wastes into particles with a size and aspect ratio to be flowable; a feeder that conveys the plastic particles in a constant flow without bridging; a dissolution vessel to selectively dissolve an individual polymer component in a solvent; a high temperature filter to separate the dissolved polymer component from the undissolved plastics; a precipitator to precipitate the dissolved polymer component; a low temperature filter to separate the precipitated polymer component from the solvent; and a distillation unit to purify the recycled solvent. The unique design of the feeder and the dissolution vessels allows the system to run in a semi-continuous mode.

Abstract: Provided are a reprocessed material of recycled polyvinyl butyral and the method for producing the same. The method comprises steps (A) and (B); step (A): heating a first mixture comprising recycled polyvinyl butyral and an antiblocking agent; and step (B): adding a free radical initiator into the first mixture to undergo a reaction to obtain the reprocessed material of recycled polyvinyl butyral; wherein the free radical initiator comprises an azo compound, an organic peroxide or a combination thereof; the reprocessed material of recycled polyvinyl butyral has a MI of greater than 7 g/10 min at 190° C. and under 2.16 kg of load. The reprocessed material of recycled polyvinyl butyral has excellent reprocessability, so it is applicable to make a hot adhesive and a composite material film.

Abstract: A process for recovering wastes of a polymeric composition including at least one peroxide-curable polymer and at least one peroxidic crosslinking agent, which includes compounding the wastes with at least one antioxidant agent suitable for sulfur-vulcanized elastomeric compositions, at a temperature lower than the decomposition temperature of the at least one peroxide crosslinking agent. The compounding of the polymeric wastes with the antioxidant agent is carried out at a temperature lower than the decomposition temperature of the peroxide crosslinking agent, so as to avoid any premature activation of the crosslinking agent. The process is particularly suitable for compositions based on elastomeric polyolefins, more preferably for elastomeric ethylene copolymers such as ethylene-propylene copolymers (EPR) and ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymers (EPDM), which can be processed at relatively low temperatures, much lower than the decomposition temperatures of the most common peroxide crosslinking agents.
