Abstract: A rotary valve is disclosed suitable for replacement of poppet valves. The valve is temperature controlled through a combination of heat transfer techniques and means for reducing heat transfer between gas flows and the valve components. Assymetric geometry is used in the seals to reduce wear and friction, and a removable combustion chamber in the valve housing is used to facilitate fabrication, servicing and performances. A prototype of the valve was developed for a 30 cubic inch displacement four-stroke spark-ignition engine. The gas seals and lubricated parts of the rotary valve have been found to remain below 400 degrees Fahrenheit during test runs wherein the valve controlled gas flows and has maintained a brake mean effective pressure of 108 to 121 psi for periods of up to an hour. The valve uses pure rotation, and can be dynamically balanced for operation to the peak RPM permissible with reciprocating pistons. A four-stroke engine converted to rotary valving needs very few parts. For example, a four cylinder automotive engine fitted with a spheroidal rotary valve system requires only 11 moving parts; namely a crankshaft, pistons and rods, the valveshaft and a timing belt to drive the valveshaft. The valve is applicable to new engine production and is also suitable as a cylinder head assembly for retro-fit to existing engines of the overhead camshaft type.

Abstract: An internal combustion engine (10) incorporating a rotary intake-exhaust valve (30). Intake exhaust valve (30) rotates between intake passage (36) and exhaust passage (34) such that intake-exhaust port (28) is aligned with intake passage (34) during the intake cycle and aligned with exhaust passage (34) during the exhaust cycle. Use of a rotary valve eliminates vibration normally found when reciprocating intake valve and exhaust valve are used and also provides weight saving due to simplified manufacturing processes, fewer parts and a higher strength engine wall due to elimination of one opening port into the engine. Valve (30) is operated by electro-mechanical means (40) so that the point in the power cycle at which air is admitted and exhausted may be varied. Abstract: A rotary valve system for an internal combustion engine having ball-type valves with through bores. The valves are driven by rocking cam mechanisms within passageways for controlling communication through intake and exhaust passages. Valve seats are arranged to either side of the valves such that sealing thereof may occur. In one embodiment, side cut portions are employed to allow either intake or exhaust gases to flow around the valve body as well as through the through bore when the valve is in the opening or closing orientation. In another embodiment, a through bore of square cross section is provided to increase flow during opening and closing thereof. In a third embodiment, a bias mechanism is employed to provide torque on the valves and drive mechanism to eliminate clearances such that impact between components will be reduced or eliminated.

Abstract: An internal combustion engine has a stator passage leading to a cylinder. An intake poppet valve is disposed between the cylinder and stator passage, and a rotary valve adjoins the opposite end of the stator passage. The rotary valve has a rotor with an elongated tapered rotor passage partially in registration with the stator passage. The rotor is driven by the crankshaft and is adjustable in phase to vary the time of opening and closing of the rotary valve, and is axially shiftable to vary the valve opening duration.
